Roadrunners Announce 2009 Schedule

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
Four NCAA Tournament participants headline the 2009 CSUB women's soccer schedule which was announced Monday afternoon by Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke. San Diego, Fresno State, UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State are all slated to play the ?Runners who play in their third NCAA Division I schedule.

The ?Runners will play five of their first seven, and seven of its first 10 contests at home on the Main Soccer Field this fall. In all, CSUB will play 10 home games, eight road games and have one neutral field contest. Of the 19 opponents listed in 2009, 10 are rematches from last season and five will be first time opponents. Seven teams are from the Big West Conference, four are from the West Coast Conference, three are from the Western Athletic Conference and two are members of the Mountain West Conference.

“Not being in a conference allows for a flexible schedule,” Van Dyke said. “It is a lot of fun playing new opponents as well as traveling to different cities. That aside, our schedule in 2009 is very difficult. But since half of the games are repeat teams from last year, you should be able to see our growth. We have worked hard during the off season so we are looking for it to pay off for us.”

The season kicks off with the ?Runners hosting UC Riverside on Friday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Aug. 23, CSUB welcomes San Diego for a 7 p.m. contest. The Torreros advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2008.

A trip to Las Vegas and the UNLV Tournament headlines the next set of games as CSUB takes on the host Rebels on Friday, Aug. 28, at 4:30 p.m. before facing New Mexico on Sunday at 1 p.m.

UC Davis and Cal Poly visit Bakersfield on Sept. 4 and 6, respectively, for a pair of weekend games. The ?Runners and the Aggies will play on Friday and the Mustangs match-up is slated for Sunday. Both contests will begin at 7 p.m.

After facing Eastern Washington on Sept. 11, CSUB travels to Fresno for a match against Valley rival and defending WAC Champion Fresno State on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.

The last weekend home series of the season will feature 2008 Big West Tournament Champion UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, Sept. 17, and WAC member Hawaii on Sunday, Sept. 20. Both contests will start at 7 p.m.

CSUB will then travel for nearly a month, playing on the road at Loyola Marymount (Sept. 27), Cal State Fullerton (Oct. 1), Pepperdine (Oct. 8), and Long Beach State (Oct. 11). Long Beach State won the regular season Big West title and were invited to the NCAA Tournament last fall.

The ?Runners return home on Oct. 16 to face Seattle University before making the short trip to Cal State Northridge on Oct. 23. On Sunday, Oct. 25, San Jose State plays in Bakersfield and on Friday, Oct. 30, the ?Runners head to Grand Forks, N.D., to play the University of North Dakota.

The season ends on Sunday, Nov. 1, as the Roadrunners play the Dons from the University of San Francisco at 11 a.m.
