Roadrunners Fall in Defensive Struggle with Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. - The CSUB women's soccer team fell, 1–0, Thursday afternoon to the Pepperdine Waves at Tari Frahm Rokus Field. The loss moves the Roadrunners' record to 4–8–1 on the season while the Waves improve to 7–4–0. Pepperdine outshot the Roadrunners, 9–7, and held and edge in corner kicks, 3–2. CSUB was whistled for 14 fouls to the Waves' six.

Both defenses held strong through the first half and neither team was able to find the back of the net until the 61st minute when Pepperdine's Michelle Manning scored, giving the Waves a 1–0 advantage. Sophomore Kassi Massey (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale HS) led the team with two shots. Sophomore Kym Gause (Manteca, Calif./Modesto JC) and Pepperdine's Roxanne Barker each made five saves on the evening.

“We were a bit flat today,” Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke said after the match. “We did play better in the second half, however, so I was pleased with that. We obviously have been struggling to score goals and that is something that we are continuing to work on. We knew this was a tough road stretch and with one game left on our four–game road trip, we will be ready to play again on Sunday.”

CSUB's four–game road trip concludes on Sunday, Oct. 11, as the Roadrunners travel to take on the Long Beach State 49ers at 3 p.m.
