ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The CSUB volleyball team completed its
second consecutive sweep of South Carolina State in dominating fashion, setting
a school record for fewest points allowed in a 25-13, 25-8, 25-19 win over the
Bulldogs Saturday afternoon.
CSUB
held South Carolina State to just 40 points. Under the 25-point coring system,
the Roadrunners had twice allowed 41 points in sweeps of New Jersey Tech and
Chicago State last season.
The
eight points allowed in the second set matched the fewest the 'Runners have
yielded in the rally scoring era, equaling their 25-8 third set win over Idaho
State in 2008.
As
a team, CSUB set an NCAA Division I era school record by hitting .420, with 42
kills against just eight errors in 81 swings. That breaks the record of .404
set in a sweep of Chicago State on Nov. 16, 2007.
As
the team numbers suggest, several individual Roadrunners had big days.
Sophomores Alysia Baker (Vista/Tri-City Christian) and Lindy DeGeare
(Stockdale HS)
combined for 20 kills and just one error. Junior outside hitter Lindsay Toone (Liberty HS)
recorded the first double-double of her career with 10 kills and 12 digs.
Sophomore
setter Danielle Gong (Stockdale HS) saw her first extensive collegiate action as a
setter Saturday, posting career highs of 23 assists, three kills and two aces.
The
'Runners picked up where they left off Friday night, hitting .611 in the first
set Saturday to set yet another school record. They came back with 17 kills
against no errors while hitting .607 in a second set tour de force.
"This
was a good trip for us in that we got to follow up a win we had to grind out (a
five-setter vs. Northridge) with two of our better performances of the season,"
said Head Coach John Price. "We'll need to continue to play at a high level if
we're going to beat a Riverside team that is much better than its record
indicates."
CSUB improves to 10-10 on the season with Saturday's win, its third in a row. South Carolina State fell to 6-12.
CSUB
returns home to host Big West Conference foe UC Riverside on Friday, Oct. 9 at
7 p.m. It will be the Highlander's first visit to Bakersfield since the schools
were NCAA Division II rivals in 1999.
