LONG BEACH, Calif.
- The CSUB women's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw with Long
Beach State Sunday
afternoon at George Allen Field. The Roadrunners are now 4-8-2 on the season while the 49ers are 5-6-2. Sophomore Kym Gause (Manteca,
Calif./Modesto JC) made nine saves to
record her fourth shutout of the season.
Each team generated plenty of chances throughout the game
but each time, a shot would sail just wide or the opposing defenses would step
up with a big stop. Long Beach held
a 18-10 advantage in shots and earned five corner kicks to CSUB's three.
Freshman Sam Pena (Bakersfield HS) had a team-high six shots, five on goal.
Emily Kinsborough had five saves in goal for the 49ers.
"I thought we had two great opportunities to score in the first half," Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke said. "One where Sam (Pena) chipped the goalkeeper and the other when Brittany (Thomas) hit the cross bar. We are hoping to use the same momentum for our next set of home games. So far this season we have done exceptionally well against Big West teams and being that this is the conference we want to play in, we hope to continue that success."
Midway through the first half, Gause made a great diving
stop to the far post after a Long Beach
State corner kick was redirected by
Nicole Hubbard.
A long pass from freshman Brittany Thomas
(Bakersfield/Ridgeview HS) was tracked down by classmate Pena later in the opening
half. Pena flicked the ball past the 49ers' keeper and it looked as if the ball
would bounce into the net unobstructed. But a great hustle play by the Long
Beach defense kept the ball out of the net with a
header on the goal line, resulting in a Roadrunner corner kick.
Later in the first, Thomas found a bouncing ball inside the
box and fired a shot that cleared the keeper but hit the cross bar and bounced
backwards. A couple minutes later, a bouncing ball in front of the CSUB net
looked as if it would be an easy put away for the 49ers but Gause positioned herself
in the exact spot to make the save.
Each team had chances in the second half but neither were
able to find the back of the net, leading to the second overtime game for CSUB
in the last three contests.
The Roadrunners withstood a couple of early chances from the
49ers and created a couple of their own but again, the teams remained locked in
a 0-0 tie at the end of the first overtime.
With under a minute remaining in the second overtime, the
49ers' Jenny Soza got a free run into the box but chipped the ball up overtop
of an outstretched Gause in net.
The Roadrunners return to the Main Soccer Field on Friday,
Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. to take on the
Seattle University Redhawks. Wear pink and join CSUB in the support of breast
