FRESNO, Calif. ? Freshman Ke'Airra Jones was one of four athletes to clear 5-7 in the finals of the women's high jump Saturday earning a tie for second place at the Cal-Nevada Championships hosted by Fresno State.
Three other CSUB track and field athletes competed in finals events Saturday, including Peace Nwosu in the high jump, Brian Lopez in the javelin and Derek Johnson in the discus. The Roadrunners' fifth finalist, Steve Trojanwoski, was unable to compete due to a prior comittment with CSUB's men's soccer team.
“I'm happy with today's performance,” said ?Runners Head Coach Alan Collatz. “This was a high-caliber meet and we had a number of solid finishes.”
Jones, who has now competed in three meets so far this season and increased her top mark by two inches each time out, joined two athelets from UCLA and one from UC Santa Barbara in clearing the 5-7 mark. Nwosu finished in a tie for eighth in the same event, clearing 5-3.
In the men's javelin, Lopez earned a mark of 184-02, five feet shy of his distance in the preliminaries, but still good enough for a third place finish.
The ?Runners' fourth finalist, freshman Derek Johnson, surpassed his previous personal-best in the discus by nearly five feet with a 177-10, fifth place mark.
“Derek did really well today,” said Collatz of the Agoura Hills native. “That was a big throw for him and a big PR.”
Next weekend, the men's and women's squads travel to Claremont for the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
