BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? Seattle University's Andrew Kreiler broke a 2-2 tie with 1:12 remaining in double overtime to spoil the CSUB men's soccer team's senior night Friday on the Main Soccer Field in Bakersfield.
Prior to the match, Roadrunner seniors Manny Garcia, Manny Guzman, Sean Jarvis, Towa Manda and Steve Trojanowski were honored in a short ceremony, then stepped onto the pitch for their final appearance in a white CSUB uniform.
Garcia got the action going early for the ?Runners, taking the ball down the right flank and sending a pass into the box where Matt Shaxton volleyed it into the net, giving CSUB a 1-0 lead at the 5:42 mark.
The score remained 1-0 in Bakersfield's favor until the 51st minute when the CSUB defense failed to clear the ball and Seattle's Kyle Peterman drove in the loose ball from the six yard line.
Just five minutes later, the Redhawks struck again, this time on a goal by Wesley Van Hooser, who slotted a low right-footed shot into the right side of the net off a cross from Kreiler.
After the letdown in energy level to start the second half, the ?Runners got going again midway through the period with Alberto Navarro knotting the score at 2-2 in the 69th minute. The ball was brought out of the backfield and sent up the left flank to Ken Taylor who beat a Seattle defender, then drew keeper Emerson DeOliveira off his line and slotted a pass across the goalmouth to Navarro, who one-touched it into the net.
Deadlocked through 100 minutes of play, Seattle broke out with three shots in the second sudden-death overtime period, finally finding the back of the net at the 108:48 mark.
The Redhawks (10-3-1 overall) earned a slight 11-10 edge on shots, while Bakersfield had 10 corner kicks to Seattle's six. Trojanowski finished the match with three saves for the ?Runners, while DeOliveira had four.
Bakersfield (4-12-0 overall) concludes the 2008 season Sunday at San Diego State. Kickoff at the SDSU Sports Deck is 1 p.m.
