LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Oscar Coppieters put the Roadrunners up 1-0 with a volley off a corner kick early in the second half, but Loyola Marymount responded with a pair of unanswered goals claim a 2-1 overtime win in men's soccer action Thursday.
Bakersfield (2-10-0 overall) pressed forward from the opening kickoff, generating a header shot on goal by Joe Polifroni less than a minute into play. LMU (2-2-4 overall) keeper Patrick Sampson was able to get a hand on the ball, however, directing it away from the net.
After a scoreless first half, the 'Runners came out strong in the second, earning a corner kick in the 52nd minute of play. Javier Barba, returning to the lineup after missing the last three games due to injury, sent the ball into the mix where Coppieters was able to volley it into the net.
A brief letdown immediately following the goal would prove costly for the 'Runners as Artur Jozkowicz scored on a header at just three minutes later. Steffen Canty sent a long ball into the box where Jozkowsicz was able to place the ball out of the reach of CSUB keeper Steve Trojanowski.
Knotted 1-1 at the end of regulation, it was the Lions who carried the momentum into overtime, scoring just 27 seconds into the first “golden goal” period. Fernando Barba notched the gamewinner, blasting a shot from 22 yards out.
Trojanowski faced 18 second-half shots by the Lions, who were battling back from the 1-0 deficit, fending off the LMU attack time after time and finishing the match with nine saves.
Seeking an end to it's current five-match losing streak, Bakersfield travels to Seattle Saturday for a noon kickoff against Seattle University at Championship Stadium.
