SAN JOSE, Calif.
- The CSUB women's soccer team dropped a Wednesday evening contest to San
Jose State, 3-0,
at Spartan Stadium. The Roadrunners' record now drops to 4-11-1 while the Spartans improved to 4-7-3. Despite outshooting SJSU, 17-14, and earning two more corner kicks,
the ?Runners dropped its first contest of the season to a Western Athletic
Conference opponent, putting the season's tally at 2-1-0 against the WAC.
The scoring began in the seventh minute as Lauren Sanchez
put the Spartans up 1-0, beating CSUB keeper Briana Estolano to the near right
post.
Alexa Vickroy threaded a pass to Kassi Massey in the 40th
minute of play to give CSUB its best scoring chance of the first half. Massey
split the SJSU defenders but had her shot stopped by Nina Butera on the goal
line. The rebound on the shot bounced away from Butera for a split second but
the keeper covered it before Massey could get to it.
Massey would get off another clean shot as the half went
under two minutes to play but the shot sailed wide right off the freshman
striker's foot.
Roxy Kamal extended the SJSU lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute
as she took a breakaway pass from Brittany Boehm. Katie Bonadies capitalized on
a CSUB defensive miscue in the 71st minute and chipped a ball past Estalano to
extend the Spartan advantage to 3-0.
Estolano finished with four saves for the ?Runners. Butera
had three saves before being replaced at the half by Sarah Wisotsky, who had two
stops. Massey finished with a game-high five shots while Ryann Hernandez had
three with two on goal.
The Roadrunners' next action will be on Thursday, Oct. 23
when the team travels to Utah Valley
University for a noon match. CSUB returns to the Main Soccer
Field for Senior Day on Oct. 26 against the University of the Pacific at 3 p.m.
