ATHERTON, Calif. - Six Roadrunners
took first place and 14 of the 17 CSUB wrestlers competing placed at
the Menlo Invitational Sunday. A dominating performance in every
weight class led to an accumulation of more than 200 points and a
first place team finish.
“This was a good experience for some
of the guys who don't get much mat time and for some of our young
starters to get in some extra matches,” said CSUB Assistant Head
Coach Mike Mendoza. “The competition was not as strong as our other
tournaments, but it's still good to get the matches in.”
Redshirt freshman Riley Orozco turned
in one of the 'Runners best performances of the day. After working
his way through the 184
bracket, Orozco took on Embry-Riddle's
Travous DeGroat, an opponent he had beaten by a narrow 5-4 margin on
Wednesday. This time around, Orozco jumped up 10 points early, then
win the match by pin for the first place title.
Also taking the top spots in their
respective divisions were junior Zack Bigboy (125), junior Thomas
Kimbrell (133), redshirt freshman Elijah Nacita (141), senior Daniel
Alejandro (157) and senior Ernesto Ancona (197).
Sophomore John Cardenas placed fourth
in the 133 division and freshmen Trevor Hall and Joey Granata
finished second and third at 157. At 165, junior Jason Points and
sophomore Daniel Montanez took second and third place, respectively
while redshirt freshman Troy Goodban placed fourth at 174.
Rounding out the 'Runners'
placewinners were junior Garth Wara (197) and senior Ryan Bergman
(285) who each earned third place finishes.
