CSUB Routs Aggies For Fifth Consecutive Win

DAVIS, Calif. ? Wins in nine out of ten bouts led to a CSUB 32-4 win over UC Davis in Pac-10 wrestling action Wednesday at Hickey Gymnasium.

The Roadrunners push their win streak to five straight, improving to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in Pac-10 duals.

Ryan Bergman got things started off in the heavyweight division, using a takedown with just two seconds remaining in the match to break a 1-1 tie and come away with the 3-1 win.

At 125, Brandon Zoetewey jumped out to an early lead on the Aggies Marcos Orozco, collecting a takedown and three-point nearfall in the opening period to go up 5-0. Zoetewey would score a reversal in the second period and earn one more point for riding time in his 8-2 victory.

Thomas Kimbrell stretched his individual win streak to six-straight by earning a 10-4 decision over Brandon Low at 133, while Elijah Nacita picked up his 20th win of the season as he stretched an early 8-0 lead into an eventual 11-6 victory at 141.

At 149, the UCD's Barrett Able used a first-period takedown and escape to garner and early 3-2 lead over Jeremy Doyle, but the CSUB senior used a nine-point second-period to go ahead 13-3 and eventually claim a big 17-4 major decision.

?Runner freshman Trevor Hall earned the 20th win of his young career with an 8-2 decision over Drew Maraglia at 157. Daniel Atondo followed with an easy 13-3 major decision at 165 while at 174, CSUB's Jason Points snapped a three-match losing streak by coming from behind to top Jon Clark 6-4.

Riley Orozco would earn a forfeit win at 184, bringing the ?Runner point total to 32, while the only CSUB loss of the night was suffered in the 197 bout as Garth Wara fell 10-2 to the Aggies' Abe Otrabo.

“We had good pace and good tempo in pretty much all of our matches,” said Assistant Head Coach Mike Mendoza. “We were able to use our conditioning level to our advantage, working them on the outside and running back to center.”

The ?Runners will look to continue their hot streak Thursday as they make the short jump to Stanford for a 7 p.m. start. CSUB then heads to San Francisco State for a dual meet on Friday and the annual California Collegiates Saturday, hosted by SFSU.
