MORAGA, Calif. ? At least nobody can fault the CSUB women's soccer team for its cupcake schedule. For the second time in three matches to open the season, the Roadrunners fell to a top 25 ranked opponent Friday, losing to No. 16 Cal 3?0 in the opening match of the Saint Mary's Tournament in Moraga.
Soft goals continued to plague the otherwise solid CSUB (0?3 overall) defense. Cal (3?0) scored on three of the eight shots it put on target Friday. Through the the first three matches, 11 of the 18 shots 'Runner opponents put on frame have found the back of the net.
“I thought this was easily our best match,” said CSUB Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke. “We played well for long stretches and we didn't allow them to build a lot of quality scoring chances. But we gave up some soft goals again today and you can't afford to do that against a team like Cal.
“Cal is a solid team ? maybe the best we'll play all season ? and I think this is a quality result for a team with 13 freshman like us.”
The Bears scored the only goal they would need in the 17th minute when Stephanie Wieger headed home her first of the season off a Laurie Gartrell free kick. Torrey Delaplane and Carolina Lea added second half markers to close out the scoring.
Bakersfield returns to action Sunday when it closes play at the Saint Mary's Tournament against the host Gaels. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. in Moraga.
