SAN JOSE, Calif. ? There was no rest for the weary in San Jose as the CSUB men's soccer team fell in game three of its seven?game road trip, 2?0 at San Jose State Wednesday at Spartan Stadium.
CSUB yielded a penalty kick goal early in the second half and the clinching goal in the closing minutes. The Roadrunners fell to 2?5?3 with the loss. San Jose State evened its record at 4?4?0.
“We didn't play very well today; we were very average,” said CSUB Head Coach Simon Tobin. “With two days rest, we played on tired legs and that showed in our effort.”
The match turned on a pair of close officials' decisions. Late in the first half, CSUB sophomore forward Mike Esparza had his legs taken out as he broke in on goal with no penalty awarded. But 2:29 into the second half, a similarly close decision went in San Jose's favor, and Ed Brand buried the resulting penalty for a 1?0 Spartan lead.
“That was the difference in the match,” said Tobin. “Two close calls that you usually don't get on the road. I expect those things to even out at home, but it seems we're never home this season,” he added, noting that the 'Runners will have played 12 of their first 14 matches on the road by the time their current trip ends Oct. 6.
Colby Moore sealed the match for San Jose State, scoring his fourth of the season in the 81st minute off an assist from Nick Cukar. Spartan goalkeeper Lewis Sweeney made five save to make sure the lead stood up.
CSUB continues its lengthy midseason roadtrip Friday when it heads to Sin City to face UNLV.
