BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? Playing your first match at the NCAA Division I level with 13 freshman on your roster isn't a recipe for victory. Adding a dash of the No. 25 ranked team in the nation made the dish a tough one to swallow for the the CSUB women's soccer team as national power Long Beach State handed the upstart Roadrunners a 5?0 defeat Friday night on the Main Soccer Field in Bakersfield.
The 49ers put just six shots on frame, but they were all quality efforts and five of them found their marks. Nikki Myers did the most damage, putting the match on ice with a pair of second half tallies.
Kristen Kiefer scored the match winner midway through the first half and added an assist on Myers' first goal. Mariko Strickland assisted on the first two 49er scores.
Bakersfield's best chance to score came in the 72nd minute when a Long Beach State foul set up a free kick on the left wing. Freshman defender Natalie Haigh struck her shot well, but reserve goalkeeper Breanna Truelove made a nice, leaping effort to tip the ball over the bar and out of danger.
CSUB returns to action Sunday, closing a brief two?match homestand against UC Irvine on the Main Soccer Field. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
