GREENSBORO, N.C. - The CSUB wrestling team got strong performances from a veteran and a rookie Sunday as senior Jeremy Doyle and freshman Trevor Hall both earned placewinner status at the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C. In addition, both junior Garth Wara and senior Ryan Bergman finished one match out of placewinner status, helping the Roadrunners to a 14th place team finish.

Hall, competing at 157, went 4-3 overall in the two-day tournament. After picking up a pair of wins on Saturday, Hall dropped his quarterfinals match, 11-8, to No. 7 seed Kody Hamrah of NC State. The true freshman then pinned Lock Haven's Luke Lanno and earned a 6-4 decision over Binghamton's Nate Patterson before two losses forced him to settle for sixth place.

“Having a freshman place is great,” said CSUB Assistant Head Coach Mike Mendoza. “Since struggling at Las Vegas, Trevor has been wrestling better and better.”

A 2-1 effort Saturday kept Doyle in the consolation bracket in the 149 division. He opened Sunday's action with three straight wins, including a 6-5 decision over No. 3 seed Eric Medina of Maryland. Doyle then dropped a tight 3-0 decision to No. 4 seed Scott Ervin of Appalachian State and a 10-5 decision to No. 9 seed Bryce Saddoris of Navy to finish in 8th place.

In the 197 division, Wara finished with a 2-2 record and in the 285 division, Bergman completed action with a 3-2 record, though both came up one round shy of competing for the top eight.

“Both Wara and Bergman wrestled extremely well,” said Mendoza. “These four guys have gained a lot of experience and growth over through our first four tournaments.”

The ?Runners are home in the Icardo Center on Jan. 3 for the first of four home dual meets this season. Competition against Embry-Riddle University begins at 7 p.m.
