MORAGA, Calif. ? The already shorthanded CSUB women's basketball team made its trek to the Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic without starting guard Kelley Tarver, who remained in Souther California following the death of her father Bernard Tarver earlier this week. The Roadrunners had no answer for her absence in an 83?53 loss to Boise State Friday evening at McKeon Pavilion in Moraga.
Christine Kepenekian led the CSUB (2?3) with 14 points. Krista Arase chipped in 10 points and eight assists. Freshman forward Shawnee Carter added a career?high nine points while 'Runner volleyball middle blocker Rosemary Stribling saw her first collegiate action after joining the team this week and scored two points with one rebound and one assist.
The 'Runners were so shorthanded that they finished the game with freshman long jumper Briana Woodfox, freshman high jumper Ke'Airra Jones, volleyball outside hitter Sarah Warner and Stribling on the court. That quartet had a combined 17 minutes of collegiate experience entering Friday's game. Warner and Stribling had just begun practicing with the team after volleyball season ended last week.
Jessica Thompson led all scorers with 15 points for Boise State (3?1). Ten of the 11 Broncos who saw action scored at least two points.
The Roadrunners turned the ball over 10 times in the first seven minutes ? including seven traveling calls on the perimeter ? yet trailed only 15?12 with 13 minutes to play. But Boise eventually overcame a slow shooting start to the game and gradually pulled away.
Trailing by 18 just before the half, Bakersfield cut the lead to 13 on the first possession of the second half and had a chance to get closer, but consecutive turnovers allowed the Broncos to get the lead back to 17 points and CSUB couldn't stop the bleeding.
The Roadrunners will play in the consolation game of the Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic against the loser of the late game between host Saint Mary's College and Yale University Saturday at 5:05 p.m. CSUB returns home following final exams to host The Master's College in the Icardo Center on Dec. 3.
