SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield dropped another close dual on Friday night with a 25-15 loss at Cal Poly in a matchup that was closer than the final score indicated.
Daniel Atondo got things off to a good start for the Roadrunners with technical fall over Evan Barbre at 165 pounds to revenge the Roadrunner junior's two losses last Sunday.
Bakersfield jumped out to an 8-0 lead when Garth Wara decisioned Ernie Varela at 174 by a 7-2 decision. But Cal Poly won three in a row for a 15-8 advatnage.
Yuri Kalika defeated Brandon Ceremello at 184 11-5 to narrow the score to 8-2, and Cal Poly took a 9-8 advantage when Matt Monteiro pinned Brandon Halsey in the first period. Another first-period pin from Cody Parker to Eric Parker made the score 15-8 midway through the dual.
Cal Poly won three of the final five matches to solidify the win. Brandon Zoetewey won at 125 over Josh Obregon by a 9-0 major decision to narrow the team score 15-12 Cal Poly, but the Roadrunners didn't get any closer.
Darrell Vasquez won 13-4 over John Cardenas 13-4, and Dave Roberts defeated Matt Schumm 8-3 to essenntially put the dual out of reach at 22-12. Brandon Doyle kept it close by defeating Eric Maldonado 5-4 at 149, but Chase Pami defeated Jeremy Doyle 9-8 at 157 to secure the 25-15 win for the Mustangs.
The Roadrunners return home on Saturday to face UC Davis at the Icardo Center at 7 p.m.
