BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Cal State Bakersfield senior Piotr Gegotek swept the sprint freestyle events to highlight the Roadrunners' day on Saturday at the John S. Hillman Aquatics Center, but it wasn't enough as University of the Pacific swept both the men's and women's competitions.
The Tiger men won 172-152 while the women won 187-151.
Gegotek took his impressive performance of one week ago a step further this week. Last week against UC Santa Cruz, Gegotek won the 50 and 100 freestyles, but this week he not only took those two events, but also won the 200 freestyle for the triple win.
He opened his day with the 200 freestyle and won in a season-best time of 1:42.87, which was more than two seconds ahead of Pacific's Casey Lowdermilk for second place. He followed with the win in the 50 free, just missing a season-best time and finishing in 21.50. Teammate Filip Zemier was second in that event at 21.74.
Gegotek completed his triple with another season-best time in the 100 freestyle, taking first in 46.33. Zemier once again took second in that event, finishing in 47.64.
Bakersfield won eight of the 16 events competed on the men's side, but Pacific's superior depth was the difference in the meet. Overall, the Roadrunner men turned in 12 season-best times on the day.
Other men's winners included T.J. Whitacker in the 100 breaststroke (59.84); Evan Crocker in both the 1-meter (201.15) and 3-meter (193.20) diving competitions; Alexey Belyy in the 400 individual medley (4:11.32); and the 200 freestyle relay team of Gegotek, Zemier, Nathan Vizcarra and Justin Burdine-Ortega (1:26.99).
The Roadrunner women turned in nine season-best times but were only able to win four of the 16 events contested.
Bakersfield swept the diving competitions with Emily Bissett winning the 1-meter competition (172.05) and Melanie Sloan winning the 3-meter diving competition (197.25).
Also for the Roadrunner women, Alyssa Lewis won the 200 individual medley (2:17.77) and the 200 freestyle relay team of Kerry Cunnion, Joelle Johnson, Jennifer Ward and Simoné Swanepoel took first in 1:41.74.
The Roadrunners continue competition next Saturday when they travel north to take on UC Davis at 2 p.m.
