LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Despite taking the lead with just 8:14 left in regulation, the Cal State Bakersfield men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to Cal State L.A. on Wednesday 3-2 in overtime at Jesse Owens Stadium.
The Roadrunners had taken a 2-1 lead when Ryan Gay scored an unassisted goal with just 8:14 remaining in the match, but Cal State L.A. came right back and scored less than two minutes later a notched the game-winner in golden goal overtime.
Amazingly, Bakersfield allowed three goals in this match after allowing just two goals through its first five matches of the season.
Cal State L.A. got on the board first when Kyle Hewitt scored just 11 minutes into the match to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. That lead stood until halftime until Lyle Martin scored his fourth goal of the season just two minutes into the second half to level the scoreline.
The match remained tied at 1-1 until the 82nd minute when Gay scored his first goal of the season. The match looked in hand for Bakersfield needing to kill just the final eight minutes off the clock. But Cal State L.A. came back less than two minutes later when Derrek Horn tied the score at 2-2 in the 84th minute.
In extra time, the Golden Eagles outshot Bakersfield 4-0 before Morten Marthinsen scored with 4:34 remaining in the final period to give Cal State L.A. the win.
For the match, Cal State L.A. outshot Bakersfield 20-13 but the Golden Eagles maintained just a narrow 16-13 shot advantage through regulation.
Bakersfield goalkeeper Steve Trojanowski made six saves in the loss while his counterpart Patrick Fry also made six saves for the win.
The Roadrunners remain on the road on Friday when they travel to Cal Poly Pomona for a 4 p.m. kickoff in the second match of a women's-men's doubleheader.
