BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Cal State Bakersfield men’s soccer team continued it mastery of Cal Poly Pomona Wednesday night on the Main Soccer field, bringing its string of shutout minutes against the Broncos to 302 minutes with a 2-0 victory.
The shutout string dates back to the 2003 season, when the teams played to a 1-1 tie. CSUB blanked Cal Poly in both meetings last season, winning 2-0 in Pomona and 3-0 in Bakersfield.
The Roadrunners took control early, getting their first goal of the night from freshman Ryan Gay (Los Alamitos/Los Alamitos HS), who popped the ball past Broncos keeper Ben Sussman in the game’s 33rd minute after teammate Matt O’Sullivan (Preston, England) set him up with a nice crossing pass.
O’Sullivan showed the first pass was no fluke, launching another great crossing pass that senior forward Nick Angelillo (Lancaster/Quartz Hill HS) punched in at the game’s 75th minute to give the ‘Runners a little breathing room. CSUB came within a whisker of blowing the game wide open as O’Sullivan hit the post twice in the last 10 minutes of play.
Goalkeeper Marc Perez (Stockdale HS) had an easy return to the starting lineup as the CSUB defense allowed just three shots—none on goal—as he earned his first shutout of the year and third win.
Bakersfield travels to Phoenix, Ariz., for a non–conference matchup with former CCAA rival Grand Canyon on Friday (Sept. 30) beginning at 7:30 p.m. Cal Poly Pomona returns home to host Cal State L.A. on Saturday (Oct. 1) at 7:00 p.m.
