Roadrunners Sweep No. 6 San Bernardino

October 8, 2005

BOX SCORE

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Needing its best result of the season to stay in the thick of the NCAA Playoff picture, the Cal State Bakersfield volleyball team got just that, sweeping No. 6 ranked Cal State San Bernardino 30-26, 30-27, 30-26 Saturday night at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield.

The Roadrunner victory should shake up the regional rankings. Bakersfield, ranked No. 8 in the region last week, improved to 13-6 overall and 6-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. San Bernardino fell to 13-4 and 6-3.

Both teams were coming off disappointing efforts in losses Friday night. But it was the Roadrunners who bounced back with a solid effort while San Bernardino played flat throughout the match. Bakersfield hit a solid .309 while the Coyotes hit .243, exactly at their season average.

Bakersfield won Saturday's match at the service line, however. That the Roadrunners served 11 aces in three games came as little surprise for the CCAA's top serving team. But their consistently tough serving caused problems for San Bernardino all night, and setter Cristen Trent got a workout trying to get the Coyotes into their offense.

Trent's counterpart, Bakersfield sophomore Erica Baldwin, was a major headache for the Coyotes. She served five aces and set 41 assists. Outside hitters Morgan Reed and Jodi Hardin were the main beneficiaries, sharing match-high honors with 12 kills apiece.

Reed also added three aces on the night, giving her 65 for the season. She is just five aces away from tying the CSUB season record of 70 aces set by Erikka Gulbranson over 47 matches in 1994. Saturday's win marked Reed's 19th match of 2005.

Sharea Drawn, Amy Long and Traci Weamer shared match-high honors with 10 kills apiece for San Bernardino. Weamer added 10 digs while Long had a match-high four blocks.

Bakersfield returns to action Saturday afternoon when it begins the second round of CCAA play by hosting Sonoma State. San Bernardino plays at UC San Diego Wednesday night
