Offensive Explosion Leads to Pitalo's Win at CSUB

BAKERSFIELD – The Cal State Bakersfield women's soccer team poured on an offensive onslaught against the visiting Pacific Tigers Thursday night. In front of over 700 fans, the Roadrunners showed out with a 4-1 victory in Bakersfield's home opener. The win was the first for the `Runners under first-year Head Coach Whitney Pitalo.

The `Runners scored early and often, building up a 3-1 lead at halftime before icing the game with a fourth goal early in the second half:

  • Natalie O'Sullivan got the scoring started in the 19th minute when she stole the ball from the Pacific goalkeeper and won a foot race to the back of the net.
  • Miah Thomas gave Bakersfield a 2-0 lead on a hard strike in the 34th minute.
  • Less than 30 seconds later, Pacific answer back with a goal of its own to make the score 2-1.
  • CSUB got right back to offense and made it 3-1 four minutes later thanks to a pass from Daniela Osejo and a fancy finish by Isis Salazar-Ortega.
  • In the 54th minute, Kim Garcia sliced through the UOP defense and connected with Cynthia Ramirez who buried Bakersfield's fourth goal of the game.

Bakersfield's four-goal outburst is the most by a `Runner squad since 2019 when CSUB defeated Kansas City by an identical, 4-1 score.

The `Runners will head back out on the road for a weekend clash with Boise State on Sunday before coming home to host Fresno State on Sept. 4.
