CSUB Volleyball Begins Rebuilding Roster with 5 New `Runners

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A new era of Cal State Bakersfield Volleyball is approaching as the Roadrunners are preparing for the Fall 2025 season under new leadership and with a refreshed roster. Bakersfield's leadership has worked furiously to bring in talented new recruits, the first five of which we would like to introduce you to today.

Cinthia Angus, Interim Co-Head Coach shared her thoughts on what each new `Runner brings to the team in the quotes below.

Meet the `Runners
Ness Shakirova, 6-foot-0 pin hitter
  • Incoming Freshman
  • Grew up in Novosibirsk, Russia
  • Graduating from Palmetto Ridge High School in Naples, Fla.
  • Member of the first-ever IMG Academy volleyball team (2023-24)
  • Club Ambassador for Global Sports Institute Volleyball (2024-25)
  • Plans to major in Business Administration/Digital Marketing
  • "Ness is a seasoned competitor with a high volleyball IQ. She's been in the game a long time, and we're excited to watch her continue to grow and refine her game as we move into conference play."
 Eva Erzen, 6-foot-3 outside hitter
  • Incoming Freshman
  • Native of Kranj, Solvenia
  • Will graduate from Gimnazija Kranj in her hometown
  • Competed for Radolca Volley this past season
  • Spent nine years competing for ZOK Triglav Kranj Volleyball Club in Slovenia
  • Helped lead Solvenia's U19 National Team to a gold medal at the 2023 European Youth Olympic Festival
  • "Eva is a versatile and experienced player despite her age. She's played at a high level for years and gives us flexibility across multiple positions, which will be key to our success."
 Luiza Da Cruz, 5-foot-8 setter
  • Junior College Transfer
  • From Jaragua do Sul, Brazil
  • Transferring to CSUB from Miami Dade College
    • First `Runner from MDC since Rafa Bonifacio (2018-2019)
  • Led MDC to NJCAA National Runner-Up in 2023 and 2024 (48-9 record)
  • In 2023, national leader in assists per set (11.57)
  • Plans to major in Kinesiology

Nele Broszat, 6-foot-2 middle blocker
  • Junior College Transfer
  • Native of Nordkirchen, Germany
  • Spent one year at West Virginia University before transferring to Florida SouthWestern State
  • At FSS, led Buccaneers to 2024 NJCAA National title (26-1 record)
  • Competed for German Junior National Team from 2018 to 2023
  • Plans to major in Psychology
  • "Nele brings great size and presence at the net. As a middle, she adds immediate depth to the position, and we're looking forward to her making an impact from day one."
Karla Kosutic, 6-foot-1 middle blocker
  • Incoming freshman
  • From Valpovo, Croatia
  • Will graduate from Gimnazija Osijek
  • Competed with Super League team Zok enna Vukovar for two seasons
  • Last season, tallied 137 points, 40 blocks, 16 aces, and 81 kills
  • This season with Osijek, placed 5th and made it to the national semifinals
  • 2024 named Best Player in the county
