Banfield Adds Pair to CSUB Baseball Coaching Staff

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – "Hitting the ground running" has been an accurate cliché for Cal State Bakersfield's Jordon Banfield. The new Head Coach of the Roadrunner baseball program has been tasked with rebuilding the squad and Banfield announced on Thursday two men who will aide him in that process, selecting Bailey Montgomery and Justin Liserio as assistant coaches.

"As I've said several times since getting started here, people are the biggest component of a winning program and I'm really excited to add Coach Montgomery and Coach Liserio to my staff in Bakersfield," Banfield said of his first two hires for the coaching staff. "They bring a ton of energy and enthusiasm to the program and I'm entrusting them with overseeing arguably the two most important areas in recruiting and pitching."

Montgomery will act as Recruiting Coordinator/Assistant Coach for CSUB, a vital component to Banfield's process of reloading the `Runner roster. He comes to Bakersfield with a wealth of knowledge in the baseball industry, both at the professional and collegiate levels.

Most recently, Montgomery spent the past year working as the Camp Coordinator for the University of Michigan Baseball program. He worked alongside the Wolverines and the coaching staff in day-to-day operations for the camps as well as recruiting efforts.

Montgomery also knows what it takes to assist Banfield with the `Runners as he has spent four years as an Assistant Coach including the 2022 and 2023 seasons at Miami University (Ohio). During his time with the RedHawks, Montgomery helped Miami to a program record in walks while posting some of the best offensive statistics in 20 years, including 79 home runs in 2023.

Time as an Associate Scout for Major League Baseball's Atlanta Braves as well as serving as the Head Coach of the Lafayette Aviators, a summer league team for collegiate ball players, round out Montgomery's wealth of experience.

"Coach Montgomery is a guy I've known for a while now and witnessing his growth and maturation at Miami, and more recently Michigan, has been fun to watch," Banfield said. "He'll lead our recruiting efforts and be tasked with continuing to sign better players and better people every year as we work to elevate the program here. I'm confident that nobody in the country has a longer list of names than Bailey and I know he won't be outworked on the trail."

A rising talent in the collegiate baseball world, Liserio comes to Bakersfield after spending the past season at Texas Christian University. A former collegiate pitcher, Liserio was the Assistant Pitching Coach for TCU while also doubling down as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Horned Frogs. TCU went 33-21 during the 2024 season before being eliminated in the late rounds of the Big 12 Tournament.

Liserio's degree in Exercise Science led him to spend three and a half years as a Performance Coach at Tread Athletics before he embarked on his coaching journey. His insight into biomechanics, throwing programs, and injury prevention will be crucial asset for the `Runner baseball program.

"Coach Liserio isn't someone I knew previously, but after one conversation it was clear to me that he was a rising star in the pitching world," Banfield added. "Having spent the past year running the development side at TCU coupled with his prior experience at Tread Athletics, I believe Justin is ready to run a pitching staff and I look forward to working with him to make that dream of his reality. What really stands out is his understanding of how to blend individual physical development with the team side of the game and because of that I'm confident the `Runners will be at the forefront of pitching development for years to come."

Stay tuned for more news as Banfield plans to announce the remaining members of his coaching staff later this month. Follow @CSUB_baseball on Twitter and @CSUB.baseball on Instagram for the most up-to-date information and behind-the-scenes access.
