CSUB at Titan Tune-Up

• The Roadrunner throwers were the only CSUB track and field athletes who traveled this weekend for a final tune-up in Fullerton, Calif.
• Jessi Solis claimed first place with a hammer throw mark of 173’10”.
  • The winning toss was a mere eight inches shy of Solis’ personal record, but it was more than enough for the win as Solis bested her next-closest competitor by more than 20 feet (152’6”).
• On the men’s side of the ring, Javier Toro was the first collegiate finisher and placed second overall in the hammer throw.
  • Toro’s best throw of 208’6” was a new PR by more than five feet. 
  • The junior now ranks 40th in his region and is all but guaranteed a spot in the NCAA West Preliminary meet later this month.
• Axel Salazar placed fourth in the same event with a throw of 184’6”, his third-best performance of the season.
• Next week, all of the `Runners head to the Central Coast for the Big West Championships.

• The Cal State Bakersfield softball team traveled to Southern California for a three-game set against Big West foe Long Beach State.
• The Beach, who are battling for first place in the league, swept the weekend series while holding the Roadrunner offense to just one run.
• Carter Thornton was the most effective pitcher for CSUB for the second-straight weekend.
  • The graduate transfer allowed just one run over two appearances and 2.2 innings pitcher against LBSU.
• Bakersfield native Rylee Price had her nine-game hitting streak snapped after opening the series with a base hit.

CSUB 0, LBSU 10 (6 inn.) – Friday, May 3

• CSUB starting pitcher Sophia Guerra Leiva held the Beach scoreless through the first three innings of work.
• LBSU broke through in the bottom of the fourth after a pitching change and ultimately plated three runs in the frame.
• The Beach added three more runs in the fifth inning before walking off with a four-run sixth.
• Rylee Price extended her hitting streak to nine games with CSUB’s only hit of the game.

CSUB 0, LBSU 12 (5 inn.) – Friday, May 3

• LBSU scored all 12 of its runs in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The frame saw the Beach tally nine hits while the `Runners tallied four errors.
• The lone bright spot of the contest for Bakersfield came when infielder Shaylene Fuimaono moved to the circle to pitch the bottom of the fourth.
  • Fuimaono, making her collegiate pitching debut, recorded a 1-2-3 inning, retiring the LBSU side in order.

CSUB 1, LBSU 10 (5 inn.) – Saturday, May 4

• Long Beach State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
• Bakersfield tallied its first run of the series in the fourth frame when Kaia Johnson doubled and scored on an error.
• The Beach responded with six more runs in the bottom half of the fifth to go ahead 10-1.
• Bakersfield rallied in the top of the fifth, putting a pair of `Runners on base thanks to a Natalya Rodriguez double and a Maya Williams walk, but LBSU shut the door on the pressure to sweep the series.

• The Roadrunners dropped a Big West series on the road at UC Riverside before closing out a long weekend of action with a Monday matchup with California Baptist.
• Kyler Stancato had a huge night in Game 1 versus UCR, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs.
• Ryan Verdugo continued his dominance in Big West play, going eight strong innings and striking out nine Highlanders.
  • The Roadrunner pitcher's 2.08 ERA in league games leads the entire Big West.
• Gary Grosjean put together another strong, nine-inning performance despite Bakersfield's extra inning loss.

CSUB 6, UC Riverside 1 – Friday, May 3

• Bakersfield made the trip down to Riverside for a Big West showdown with the Highlanders.
• The Roadrunners got on the board quickly going up 2-0 in the first two innings with a pair of RBI singles.
  • Kobe Silva singled through the left side plating Kyler Stancato in the first inning.
  • In the second, Elijah Pelayo singled up the middle bringing Jason Leon around to score.
• UCR cut the `Runner lead in half after an RBI single to left field.
• Bakersfield added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
  • In the top of the seventh, Cody Hendriks hit a sacrifice fly scoring Stancato for the second time on the evening.
  • In the eighth, Stancato tacked on three runs with a bases clearing double into the left center gap.
• Ryan Verdugo’s Big West dominance continued, going eight innings allowing only four hits and striking out nine Highlanders.

CSUB 4, UC Riverside 5 – Saturday, May 4

• CSUB jumped out to another early lead when a Michael Pollard single put the `Runners up 1-0.
• UCR immediately responded with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the second inning.
• The Roadrunners were able to answer back in the next inning plating two.
  • Jacob Gutierrez and Max Bernal both tallied RBI sinlges.
• CSUB climbed back tying it in the fifth inning with a Hendriks sacrifice fly scoring Gutierrez.
• The game remained knotted at 4-4 as Gary Grosjean held the Highlanders at bay after their second inning rally.
  • Grosjean went nine innings, giving up five hits while striking out four.
• Riverside walked off the `Runners on a double to left center in the tenth inning, winning 5-4.

CSUB 0, UC Riverside 3 – Sunday, May 5

• In the rubber match, both teams started out slow, going scoreless until the fifth inning.
  • UCR reached on a fielder’s choice, plating a runner to go up 1-0.
• The Highlanders added two more runs in the sixth inning following a two-RBI double.
• Kellen O’Connor struck out seven going 5.2 innings.
  • Gutierrez relieved O’Connor for the final 2.1 innings while allowing just one hit.
• The Roadrunners were able to bring the tying run to the plate in the eighth inning after Stancato walked on four pitches and Bernal singled down the right field line, but CSUB was unable to cash in.

CSUB 1, California Baptist 7 – Monday, May 6

• California Baptist jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
• The CSUB pitching staff held the Lancers quiet for the next four innings.
• CBU plated two more runs in the sixth before capping its scoring with three runs in the seventh.
• Bakersfield loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, eventually scoring its lone run thanks to an RBI walk from Max Bernal, but CBU closed the door after that.
• CSUB tallied nine hits on the day, stranding 12 `Runners on base.
