Baxter Announces 2023-24 CSUB Golf Schedule

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With a late coaching change seeing Katy Barrett Baxter take the helm of the Cal State Bakersfield women's golf team on Aug. 31, the Roadrunners had a short amount of time to prepare for the 2023-24 season ahead. Heading into this weekend's season opening tournament, Baxter has finalized the 2023-24 schedule and we sat down with her to get her thoughts heading into a new season with the `Runners.

The Schedule

Bakersfield will kick off the year in Provo, Utah this weekend at Utah Valley's Timpanagos Collegiate Classic. The `Runners will battle it out with a large field of 18 other teams in the three-day tournament at Timpanagos Golf Club, Sept. 10-12.

"I think the Fall schedule is really solid," Baxter said. "Former Coach Tiffanie Yabut did a really good job of making connections and getting commitments to certain tournaments that I was very excited we are invited to. Based on the coaching transition and where we're at with our depth, this is a solid lineup and will be efficient in preparing us for the Big West Championship."

CSUB will wrap up September at the Coeur d'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Gonzaga, a tournament to which Baxter said she has a sentimental attachment: "Coeur d'Alene is a special, unique event for me. It is the first tournament that I ever had the privilege of coaching at the collegiate level. I hold this tournament very close to my heart, all the experiences I had and all the emotions. It is a great course; it's going to test us."

The `Runners round out their Fall season with tournaments in Washington and Nevada in October before entering a stretch of training over the winter.

Bakersfield's Spring season will kick off with the team's annual duel against CSUN and Long Beach State on the first day of February. Baxter has her squad headed to one tournament in both March and April before rounding out the regular season, Apr. 4-5, at Wyoming's Cowgirl Classic in Maricopa, Ariz. All of this will prepare the `Runners to take on the 2024 Big West Championship at Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas.

The Team

Officially announced as CSUB's new Head Coach just six days ago, Baxter hit the ground running to prepare for the swiftly-approaching season. All along the way, she has emphasized a focus on the overall experience of her six Roadrunner student-athletes.

Bakersfield returns five `Runners from the team a year ago in seniors Jefi Dordevic and Christy Mae Saban, junior Yasmin Guerrero, and sophomores Sarah Mutai and Iris Han. CSUB also welcomed junior transfer Nicole Whipple to the squad after two standout seasons at Saddleback College in Southern California.

"All of the players have been extremely welcoming," Baxter said of her new team. "I cannot put into words how impressed I am with their open mindedness and willingness to accept and buy in to my coaching philosophy. We're raising our Golf IQ and we're getting better every day. I couldn't be happier with the team I inherited!"
