Katy Barrett Baxter Tabbed as CSUB Golf Head Coach

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A new leader has been chosen to head the Roadrunner women's golf program as Cal State Bakersfield Director of Athletics Kyle Conder has announced the hiring of Katy Barrett Baxter. Baxter was chosen to be Bakersfield's Head Coach on the merit of several years of experience in the professional golf world as well as time playing and coaching within The Big West.

"We are excited to welcome Katy Baxter as the Head Coach for CSUB Women's Golf," Conder said. "Katy has an outstanding vision for our program focused on our CSUB Athletics pillars: Academic Excellence, Outstanding Student-Athlete Experience, Competitive Success, and Community Engagement. Katy will enhance our program and lead CSUB Women's Golf to future success. She is a great addition to the Bakersfield community."

Baxter joined the collegiate coaching ranks in 2021 at her alma mater, Long Beach State, where she served the women's golf team as Assistant Coach for two seasons. She helped the Beach program earn a second-place finish at The Big West Championship in 2023 while Jasmine Leovao won the league's individual title. LBSU also produced five WGCA All-American Scholars in her two seasons in Long Beach.

"I'm excited and honored to be the Head Coach of the CSUB Women's golf program," Baxter said. "With my experience, grit from players, and support from the Bakersfield community, I am confident we will build a championship team. It is a privilege to lead these young women on and off the golf course. Good things are coming."

Following a successful collegiate career, Baxter earned a teaching credential while also competing professionally in the Cactus Tour before retiring and turning to work as a golf professional. She is also a dual Class A Member of the PGA and LPGA and has served in multiple leadership roles, most recently as the Western Section Vice President for the LPGA.

After retiring from competitive golf, Baxter returned to her roots as an assistant pro at Spanish Trails Country Club in her hometown of Las Vegas. She then spent four years in the same position at La Jolla Country Club in southern California before working for the Callaway Golf Company for 18 months.

"We are thrilled to welcome Katy Baxter to the Roadrunner family," said Sarah Tuohy, an Associate Athletics Director at CSUB and the golf program's Sport Administrator. "After a nationwide search, we are confident that Katy's proven expertise and passion for golf will bring an exciting new dimension to our program. Her track record cultivating both skill and character in student-athletes aligns perfectly with our vision, and we are eager to see the positive impact that she will undoubtedly have on our `Runners and the entire Bakersfield golfing community."

While competing for the Beach (then the 49ers) as a student-athlete, Baxter was a four-year letterwinner, earning First Team All-Big West honors and helping LBSU to its first-ever NCAA Regional appearance in 2006. She also recorded a Top 10 conference finish as a senior in 2008.

Baxter takes over the CSUB women's golf program following two strong seasons of growth under the watch of Tiffanie Yabut. Bakersfield returns five `Runners from the 2022-23 squad that reset multiple school records as Baxter will work with the veterans and one newcomer to continue growth and success heading into a new academic year.

The `Runners have hit the ground running with their new leader guiding the way into a new year. CSUB is scheduled to kick off the 2023-24 season at the Hobble Creek Fall Classic, Sept. 10-12, in Provo, Utah.
