CSUB Baseball's Vines and Barclay Representing in AAA

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield Baseball is proud to share news that two former `Runners were recently called up to the AAA-level in their respective organizations. Darius Vines is currently with the Gwinnett Stripers in the Atlanta Braves organization, while Edgar Barclay moved to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders with the New York Yankees. Both pitchers starred as junior college transfers for CSUB in 2019 before being drafted in the same offseason.

Darius Vines became the highest-drafted `Runner in program history after being selected by the Braves in the 7th round of the 2019 MLB Amateur Draft. He had previously been drafted twice, first following high school and then again after his freshman year of junior college. Since signing with the Braves, Vines has blitzed the minor league system, climbing all the way to AAA just two years after being drafted. Last summer, Vines was named to the Braves' 40-man roster for the first time and put together an impressive 3.21 ERA through 7 games and 33.2 IP with Gwinnett in 2022.

Still on the 40-man, Vines has moved up Atlanta's prospect ranks to become the 10th top young gun in the organization. He recently fought back into AAA after spending the beginning of the season injured and rehabbing back into the Gwinnett rotation. According to various Braves media outlets, due to Vines' pedigree and impressive start to AAA in 2023 with a 2-0 record and 2.87 ERA, he has the potential to be called up to the expanded roster prior to the 2023 playoffs and/or compete for a spot on the 26-man opening day roster in spring training next season.

Edgar Barclay, drafted by the New York Yankees in the 15th round of the same 2019 draft as Vines, has recently come onto the scene in 2023 after plying his trade in single-A for the past few seasons. Barclay's 1.74 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 2022 with the high-A Hudson Valley Renegades earned him a 2023 call-up to the Somerset Patriots in AA before posting even better numbers with just a 1.32 ERA and 1.08 WHIP through 11 relief appearances, also putting together a 3-1 record in the process.

Barclay's quick rise through the ranks caused him to become the 28th-highest prospect in the Yankees organization and yet another call-up to New York's AAA affiliate, the prestigious Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. Due to his impressive and poised start to the 2023 season, Barclay was recently moved into the starting rotation. According to prospect writers at MLB.com, Barclay could be on the big-league roster by 2024 if he continues at this roaring pace.

Head Coach Jeremy Beard, who has produced a pleasantly surprising number of professionals in the program's brief history, had this to say about these two former `Runners, "It is great to see our `Runner baseball family climbing the professional ranks. Both Darius [Vines] and Edgar [Barclay] are extreme competitors and have the tools and relentless mindset to live their dreams of playing professional baseball. They represent our program well, one pitch at a time."
