Roadrunners Take Home 7 Wins at Conover Classic

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield track and field program traveled to San Luis Obispo for the Mark Conover Classic, hosted by the Cal Poly Mustangs on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 24-25. The Roadrunners saw a lot of success throughout the two-day meet. Overall, the `Runners won seven events.

Top `Runner Performers
  • Thomas Richardson opened the meet on Friday with a second-place finish in the men's hammer throw with a throw of 184'4".
  • Jessi Solis was CSUB's first winner of the meet. Solis completed the women's hammer throw with a mark of 153'0". It is the second time in her collegiate career that she won an event.
  • In the men's distance events, newcomer's Matthew Berry and Jacob Yagers finished their events with new CSUB all-time marks. Berry took a second shot at the 3,000-meter steeplechase and ran personal-best of 9:50.61. He is now the #5 steeplechaser in program history, only four other `Runners have broken ten minutes in the event. Yagers moved up to #10 all-time in the 1,500-meter event with his time of 3:55.96. It has been over 30 years since an athlete has run faster.
  • The throwers opened Saturday's slate of events with the shot put. Garrett and teammate Richardson went 1-2 in the event. Garret threw a PB of 57'0.25" to win the event, it's the second time in his career that he takes home a win. He is now #9 on the all-time list. Ricardson's mark of 55'09" is also a PB.
  • Julia Stein won the women's 100-meter hurdles with a personal record of 14.34, she is now tied for #6 in program history. Teammate Riley Slayton took the victory in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.49. She continues a winning streak against collegiate athletes, only loss has come from a professional athlete. Jaztyn Greer followed closely in third place with a 1:08.82.
  • In the men's high jump, Jesus Alvarez won the event with a height of 6'04.75". It is the third time in his career he has won in the event.
  • Miranda Miller placed first in the women's pole vault with a mark of 13'03.75". She is currently undefeated on the season.
  • In his second event over the weekend, Yagers placed third in the 3,000-meters. His time of 8:40.04 is a personal record. He has earned personal bests almost every time he steps onto the track.
  • Julie Johnson finished the women's 400-meters in 57.98, good for third overall in the event.
  • Helena Valentic won the women's 1,500-meter race in a time of 4:55.02.
  • The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Slayton, Stein, Greer, and Johnson finished in second place with a time of 3:59.01.
