Multiple Wins for Bakersfield at Ben Brown Invitational

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield track and field's Helena Valentic broke into the CSUB top five all-time list for the 3,000-meter steeplechase to highlight the Roadrunners at the Ben Brown Invitational/AstroAl Distance Classic, held by Cal State Fullerton on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 10-11. CSUB had two first place finishes and multiple top ten finishes at the meet.

Top `Runner Performers
  • On Friday the men's hammer throws highlighted the field events for the Roadrunners. Axel Salazar led the charge with a personal best of 183'3" and sixth place finish. Fellow teammates Richardson, Matthew Garrett, and Javier Toro followed closely, all finishing in the top ten.
  • Friday evening was the AstroAl Distance Classic. Helena Valentic debuted the 3,000-meter steeplechase as a `Runner in great fashion. Valentic finished the race in first place while also breaking the meet record. Her time of 11:25.58 is good for #2 all-time at CSUB. The last Bakersfield athlete to break 12 minutes in the event was Paradise Pelzer (11:53.78) back in 2017.
  • For the men, Jacob Yagers represented the team in the 1,500-meter race. Yagers time of 3:58.29 is good for #13 all-time in program history.
  • Saturday was a full day of events and much success for Bakersfield. Thomas Richardson finished the men's shot put in first place with a throw of 54'3.25".
  • Julie Johnson ran the women's 400-meter race in a personal best of 57.43. Johnson's sixth place finish marks #19 all-time in CSUB history.
  • Teammates Riley Slayton (1:00.73) and Julia Stein (1:02.67) completed the women's 400-meter hurdles in the top five. Slayton finished second but was the first college finisher in the race.
  • Miranda Miller remains undefeated on the season in the women's pole vault. Miller jumped a 13'3.50" was good for first place.
  • The women's 4x400-meter relay race finished in third place with a time of 3:56.01. The relay team of Riley Slayton, Julia Stein, Jaztyn Greer, and Julie Johnson beat Big West opponents of UC San Diego, Hawaii, and Cal State Fullerton.
