CSUB Travel to Saint Mary's for Single Midweek Game

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield baseball team came out of opening weekend with a 3-1 record, with the Roadrunners taking the season's first series against St. Thomas by a four-game combined score of 25-13. CSUB now travels for a midweek single game against Saint Mary's.

This Weekend's Schedule:
  • at Saint Mary's (CA)
    • Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2:00 p.m.
`Runner Notes
  • The `Runners were victorious in their season opener against St. Thomas. Ryan Verdugo and Marcelo Saldana pitched a combined shutout, while star outfield duo James Bell and AJ Miller batted in all of the runs to help CSUB claim a 3-0 win.
  • A doubleheader followed on the next day, with Bakersfield splitting the pair of games with the Tommies. The `Runners used an explosive 6th inning and Brock Perreira's four RBI effort in the 8-1 victory to start the day. The Tommies got out to an early lead in the second game and closed out their win with a strong 9th inning.
  • CSUB followed up the previous day's loss with another dominant victory on the back of Matt Comnos' seven-inning quality start and six different `Runners bringing scorers across home plate. Angel Saldivar and Jacob Ruley came up big with two RBI each.
  • Through the season's first series, the `Runners collected six stolen bases, two coming from last year's leader Nick Salas who also stayed disciplined at the plate with five walks. AJ Miller led the team with five RBI, while Angel Saldivar started three of the four games and posted a .500 OB%.
Scouting the Gaels
  • Saint Mary's (1-3, 0-0 WCC) is led by third-year head coach Greg Moore.
  • The Gaels hold a 4-1 record over CSUB, but this will be the first time in over five years that these two opponents will face off. Last time, in Feb. 2018, the `Runners got the better of Saint Mary's, leaning on their pitchers for a 3-2 victory.
  • Saint Mary's experienced a tough opening weekend against the University of Illinois – Chicago, dropping its first three games against the Flames before finding the season's first win in a 8-1 seven-inning game.
  • Six of the twelve available Gaels started all four games of the series, batting at least .230 or better, while their starting pitchers all held batters to less that a .270 batting average.
  • The `Runners and Gaels will be playing in Moraga, Calif. on Tuesday, but they will also meet much later in the season for another matchup on Apr. 25 in Bakersfield.
