Popham Earns Silver on Day 2 of MPSF Championships

ST. GEORGE, Utah / MISSION VIEJO, Calif. – Day 2 of the MPSF Swimming and Diving Championships came to a close with the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners enjoying another school record performance, a silver medal, and several Top 5 all-time swims.

Women's Top Performers
  • Mikayla Popham qualified first overall in the 500 free prelims with a time of 4:52.00. The senior went on to earn a silver medal in the finals, swimming nearly two seconds faster (4:50.24). Popham now has seven conference medals in her three competitive seasons.
  • Sophomore Jessica Franco placed 14th overall in the 500 free with a time of 4:58.39. Freshman Kylie Ney went 4:58.76 while also scoring with a 16th-place finish. Senior Hannah Marsh's 5:00.61 sparked Bakersfield's evening performances.
  • Junior transfer Nicole Horton slipped into the CSUB Top 5 in the 50 free on Thursday morning, posting a time of 23.32 while qualifying 11th for the finals where she finished 13th.
Men's Top Performers
  • Antonio Milin, a native of Croatia, broke a 32-year-old CSUB record in the 50 free in the prelims. The senior swam the there-and-back in 19.97, surpassing Petr Kladiva's record from 1991 (20.04). Milin also qualified first overall before tying for sixth and earning All-Conference honors.
  • The men's 200 free relay team got the night started for CSUB with the fourth-best time in CSUB history (1:20.48). Vili Sivec's leadoff leg of 20.24 ranks fifth in CSUB's Top 5 in the 50 free. Yigit Saglam scored in the B-finals with a 20.26 in the individual 50 free.
  • Later in the evening, Sivec earned a podium placement with a fourth-place finish in the 500 free (4:25.25). Fellow freshman Arthur Schneider also scored in the event, finishing 15th overall after going 4:34.07 in the prelims.
  • Back in California, on the 1-meter springboard, Dyson Modica placed ninth overall with a score of 280.45 in the finals. Robert Vlad also made the B-finals with consistency and by "staying sharp throughout all of his dives," according to Estrella.
