Roadrunners Open 2022 Season w/ Exhibition Slate

Bakersfield, Calif. – The California State University, Bakersfield men's soccer team opens the 2022 campaign with a pair of home exhibitions this week at the Main Soccer Field. The Roadrunners will host the defending Division II National Champion Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles on Thursday evening at 7 p.m., before welcoming the Cal Bears of the Pac-12 Conference to Bakersfield, Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m.

CSUB closes out the pre-season schedule with a trip to Loyola Marymount on Friday, Aug. 19, and opens the regular season the following weekend with a trip to San Jose State and Pacific.

The 'Runners return eleven letterwinners from the 2021 campaign, which saw the team host a Big West Conference quarterfinal match-up in its first season as a full-time league member.

Senior captain and central midfielder Carlos Armendariz returns for his fifth year and fourth season in Bakersfield, after scoring four times a year ago. All four of Armendariz' goals came from the penalty spot, a new CSUB record for penalty kick conversions in the Division I era.

Co-captain and central defender Harry Downing anchors a veteran backline expected to key Roadrunner success in 2022. Downing has led the club in minutes played in each of the past two seasons.

He's joined in the back by a pair of rangy wingers in Bryson Hankins, a 2021 Big West All-Rookie selection, and Stephon Marcano, a Trinidad & Tobago national team defender. Redshirt Junior Juan Pablo Alvarez will also figure heavily on the backline after missing the entire 2021 season while recovering from injury.

Goalkeepers Scott Pengelly and Sucre Herrera split time in the CSUB goal as true freshmen. Pengelly made 15 starts and won five times, posting a 1.92 goals against average, while Herrera appeared in four contests, including a shutout of Cal State Fullerton in his first career start.

The 'Runners welcome fourteen newcomers this season, after relying heavily on seniors and graduate students during last year's run to post-season play. Touted freshman Shia Clayton, a Bakersfield native and Foothill High School graduate, is one of several newcomers expected to make an immediate impact.
