Melo Releases 2022 CSUB Volleyball Schedule

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After the 2021 volleyball season that saw the Bakersfield Roadrunners post an 18-11 record and make another postseason appearance, CSUB Head Coach Giovana Melo and her program are furiously preparing to follow that up with a strong 2022 campaign. Melo announced the Bakersfield volleyball team's 2022 schedule Tuesday afternoon, featuring a grit-testing non-conference slate and capped by a 20-match schedule of Big West matches and a chance to return to the NCAA Tournament.

"I love that our pre-season schedule is going to challenge the team in many ways," said Melo, who is heading into her ninth season at the helm of the `Runners. "Going into our first season in the Big West last year, we had no expectations. This year things will be different."

Melo's squad was predicted to place ninth of eleven teams during the 2021 campaign, but the `Runners finished fourth in the standings. CSUB's Head Coach knows her squad will not be taken lightly next season: "The pressure will be added because we earned a little more respect. We will have to be able to handle that pressure, so I believe our pre-season schedule will prepare us for that. I am extremely excited about this group. We are going to be young but very hungry."

Bakersfield's 2022 campaign opens with three-straight weekends on the road as the `Runners will test themselves against nine tough teams including four programs that were 2021 NCAA Tournament participants. After clashing with Washington State at the Cougars' own tourney, CSUB will head to Vermillion, S.D. to face three more postseason-experienced teams in host South Dakota, Northern Colorado, and West Virginia.

The fourth weekend of the year will feature CSUB's first home tournament since the 2019 season as the `Runners are set to host the Central California Challenge, Sept. 16-17. CSUB, Pacific, Sacramento State, and Fresno State will all battle in the Icardo Center with six matches played over two days of competition. This tourney will also serve as CSUB's final tune up before Big West play begins.

The `Runners will open their 2022 conference slate at home with matches against Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State on back-to-back nights, Sept. 23-24. The home schedule will wrap up just after Thanksgiving when CSUB plays UC San Diego on Black Friday before Senior Day's contest against UC Irvine on Nov. 26.

The Big West battle will result in one team claiming the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, which will open Dec. 3-5 with the first two rounds. The `Runners and the rest of the conference will duke it out as CSUB searches for its first Big West crown and its third NCAA Tournament appearance at the Division I level.
