Bell, Miller Named Second-Team All-Big West Conference

Irvine, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield outfielders James Bell and AJ Miller each earned Second-Team All-Big West Conference honors for their 2022 performance, the league office announced in a release Thursday afternoon. Bell and Miller paced the Roadrunner offense for much of the season, adding average, on-base ability and slugging as part of one of the top line-ups in CSUB Baseball history.

"Both James and AJ came here with a strong work ethic and drive to help the ball club win," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "These are team guys that made team decisions all year. Their individual awards are a by product of their hard work to help our club as a whole. Congratulations to them both!"

Bell led the Roadrunners with a .300 batting average and started 47 of the 47 games in which he appeared, with 46 starts in leftfield and one behind the plate. He finished third on the team with 13 doubles and 6 home runs, driving in 34 runs and scoring 32 more. He led the team with 11 multi-RBI outings and recorded multiple hits on 16 occasions.

Bell was even better in conference play hitting .333 with 15 of his 20 extra-base hits coming against Big West opponents.

A transfer from Oregon and Fresno City College, where he was an All-American catcher, Bell made the transition to the outfield for CSUB this season, improving tremendously on the defensive side of the ball as the season progressed.

AJ Miller was the team's top offensive threat for most of the season, finishing with a .294 batting average and leading the team in hits (59), doubles (16), home runs (12), RBI (38), runs scored (35) and slugging percentage (.552).

Ten of his 12 home runs came in conference play, along with 30 of his 38 runs driven in. His 12 round trippers ranked third in the Big West and matched former 'Runner Martin Medina's 2010 total for the most in single-season Bakersfield history.

Miller finished the season with 17 multi-hit efforts, including five occasions with three or more base hits.

The Roadrunners closed out their second season in the Big West, one of the premier baseball playing conferences in America, with an 18-34 overall record and an 11-17 conference mark. CSUB graduated just five seniors and could return as many as 35 letterwinners from its talented and youthful 2022 roster.
