'Runners Outlast Anteaters in Twelve Innings to Even Series

Irvine, Calif. – Freshman third baseman Cody Hendriks worked a two-out, bases loaded walk to put the 'Runners in front and senior Kenny Johnson pitched a perfect ninth inning as CSU Bakersfield rallied to beat UC Irvine 8-7 in 12 innings, Saturday night at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark.

"Tonight's win says a lot about the character of this ball club," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "Our guys never quit and they haven't all year, despite facing adversity in a few different ways. We're a little thin right now, but the team stepped up and it took nearly our entire bench to get the job done."

Hendriks finished the game 2-for-4 with a walk and a hit by pitch and was the late inning hero for the Roadrunners driving in a pair of runs to send the game to extra innings, before scoring a go-ahead run in the 11th and working a two-out game-winning walk in the 12th.

The Roadrunners trailed 6-3 heading to the ninth, but the first three batters reached loading the bases with no outs. Nic Anderson Vine scored on a wild pitch before Hendriks laced a single into left-centerfield to tie the game at six runs apiece.

Three Bakersfield relievers combined for eight innings of relief, allowing just eight hits and four earned runs while striking out six. Kenny Johnson worked the final two innings, including a perfect bottom of the 12th to earn his first victory of the season. Cody Tucker fanned five in 2.2 innings, including a big strike out with the bases loaded to end the tenth.

Aaron Casillas and Jashia Morrissey also had multi-hit games for CSUB, with Morrissey finishing 4-for-6 with a double a run scored and an RBI.

How It Happened...
T1 | James Bell opened the scoring with a towering two run home run off the scoreboard in left. Aaron Casillas scored on the play after leading off the inning with a single up the middle.

B1 | UC Irvine tied the game in the bottom of the inning on two hit batters, a walk and an error. Caden Kendle was hit to lead off the inning and scored on a throwing error by CSUB starter Benji Caggianelli. Nathan Church also scored on a wild pitch.

T3 | Jashia Morrissey led off the third with a double to the warning track in left and advanced to third when the throw eluded the UCI cutoff man. AJ Miller followed with a slow roller down the first-base line to pick up an RBI.

B4 | Caden Kendle jumped on a 2-1 fastball and curled a solo-home run around the left-field foul pole to tie the score at three.

B7 | Nathan Church led off the inning with an 0-2 hit by pitch, stole second and scored on a single over shortstop from Dub Gleeb.

B8 | The Anteaters got RBI singles from Caden Kendle and Woody Hadeen to stretch their lead to 6-3.

T9 | CSUB clawed back to tie the game in the ninth. A run scored on a bases loaded wild pitch, and freshman Cody Hendriks tied the game with a two-run single to left.

T11 | Hendriks was hit by a pitch to start the 11th and moved to second on Casillas' sacrifice bunt. Morrissey worked a full count before looping a run-scoring single into right-centerfield to put CSUB in front.

T12 | Hendriks worked a bases loaded walk in the 12th to plate Kurata with the game-winning run. Kurata had singled with two outs to start CSUB's late rally.

Notable...
•   CSUB shortstop Aaron Casillas was 2-for-6 and is now hitting .362 over the past 11 games.

•   Bakersfield improved to 3-2 in extra inning games this season, with tonight's win the longest contest of the season for CSUB in terms of innings.

•   Freshman Matt Kurata made his first appearance since a March 21 loss to Pepperdine. He reached base twice and scored both times, including a single through the right side with two outs to start CSUB's 12th-inning rally.

•   Left fielder James Bell homered in the top of the first inning to give CSUB a 2-0 lead. It was his sixth home run of the season, third most on the team.

On Deck...
The Roadrunners and Anteaters will wrap up a three-game series at Cicerone Field tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Sophomore Adrian Santa Cruz gets the start for Bakersfield opposed by Irvine's Cameron Wheeler.
