Dirtbags Rally to Win Series Finale

Bakersfield – Long Beach State scored twice in the seventh and twice in the ninth, coming from behind to beat CSU Bakersfield 5-2, winning the game and the series Sunday afternoon at Hardt Field. The Roadrunners made six defensive errors and all five Dirtbag runs were unearned. CSUB fell to 10-14 in conference play, while LBSU improved to 12-12.

Bakersfield starter Adrian Santa Cruz pitched into the seventh inning and allowed three runs, while scattering eight hits and striking out a pair. Santa Cruz walked just one Dirtbag and lowered his season-long earned run average to 4.91.

Long Beach's Jauron Watts-Brown settled for a no-decision despite not allowing a base hit until the fourth inning. Shortstop Aaron Casillas gave CSUB the lead in the fifth with a two-run single through the right-side of the LBSU infield.

Dirtbag reliever Matt Fields pitched 3.0 innings to earn the win while Devereaux Harrison picked up the save with a scoreless ninth.

James Bell was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double and made the defensive play of the game robbing Tanner Carlson of extra-bases with a two-out, bases loaded grab against the fence in left.

How It Happened...
T2 | Tanner Carlson singled deep into the hole at second base and Alex Pimentel scored all the way from second base to give Long Beach State an early 1-0 lead.

B5 | Nick Salas and Aaron Perez led off the bottom of the fifth inning with walks, before advancing into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from third-baseman Cody Hendriks. Aaron Casillas followed with a seeing-eye single through the right side to plate a pair and give CSUB the lead.

T7 | An Adrian Santa Cruz wild pitch bounced into the Bakersfield dugout, allowing Pimentel to again score all the way from second base and tie the game at two runs apiece. Two batters later Rocco Peppi doubled into the rightfield corner to score Carlson and put Long Beach back in front.

T9 | With the bases loaded and two outs recorded, Peyton Schulze singled through the left-side to score Eddie Saldivar and Sebastian Murillo with insurance runs and give LBSU a 5-2 lead.

On Deck...
The Roadrunners will travel north to Fresno State for their final non-conference contest of the 2022 season, at FSU's Pete Beiden Field on Tuesday, May 17 at 6:05 p.m. Bakersfield will make the return trip to face their valley rivals after hosting the Bulldogs earlier this season at Hardt Field.
