Morrissey & Miller Homer, 'Runners Even Series with Long Beach

BakersfieldAJ Miller was 2-for-3 with a double and a home run, as CSU Bakersfield scored early and never trailed in a 7-4 win over Long Beach State, Saturday night at Hardt Field. The Roadrunner win evened the series between the Big West rivals at one game a piece and lifted CSUB to 10-13 in league play this season. The Dirtbags fell to 11-12 in conference action.

Miller's home run was his league-leading 11th of the season and made it 6-2 Bakersfield in the bottom of the fourth inning. He finished the night with three runs driven in and now leads the club with 36 RBI on the year.

Jashia Morrissey also homered for CSUB, when he jumped on a two-strike fastball with one out in the bottom of the first inning to give the 'Runners an early lead. It was Morrissey's third home run of the year, with all three coming from the left-side of the plate.

James Bell and Aaron Casillas also had multiple hits for Bakersfield. Bell was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI, while Casillas was 2-for-4, including an RBI double.

Kellen O'Connor returned from a brief stint on the injured list to toss 1.1 innings of perfect relief and pick up his second win of the season. Cody Tucker worked the final three innings, striking out four and picking up his second save.

Long Beach starter Noah Carbajal took the loss, allowing four earned runs in an inning and a third, on three hits and three walks.

How It Happened...
B1 | Jashia Morrissey opened the scoring with his third home run of the season, a line drive over the fence in straightaway right field.

T2 | The Dirtbags answered with an unearned run in the second when Eddie Saldivar reached on an error, advanced to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch.

B2 | CSUB plated four two-out runs in the bottom of the second. Aaron Perez, Cody Hendriks and Nick Salas all walked, before AJ Miller drove a two-run double to left and James Bell singled up the middle to score two more.

T3 | With two outs in the third, Benji Caggianelli hit Dirtbag first baseman Jonathon Long. Peyton Schultz followed one batter later with a ringing double into the right-centerfield gap, scoring pinch runner Taylor White all the way from first.

B4 | Miller pounced on a breaking ball below his knees and golfed his 11th home run of the season around the foul pole in right field to make it 6-2 CSUB.

T5 | Chase Luttrell picked up a pair of RBI when he chopped a two-out single through the right side of the CSUB infield, pulling the Dirtbags within 6-4.

B5 | Bailey Seeger led off the Bakersfield fifth with a single up the middle. Aaron Casillas followed with a double down the line in left to score Seeger all the way from first base and give the 'Runners a 7-4 advantage.

Notable...
• One day after failing to record an extra-base hit for just the second time this season, CSUB responded with four on Saturday night. Aaron Casillas and AJ Miller each doubled, while Miller and Morrissey connected for solo home runs.

• Miller's home run was his 11th of the season. Tied for the Big West lead and the second-most in a single season in Bakersfield program history. He trails only Martin Medina, who hit 12 home runs during the 2010 campaign.

• Casillas saw a four-game doubles streak snapped Friday night, before bouncing back with his 12th two-bagger of the season on Saturday.

• O'Connor made his first appearance this season out of the CSUB bullpen, after making 11-consecutive starts to open the year. O'Connor was the team's top reliever during both the 2020 and 2021 campaigns.

On Deck...
The same two teams will meet again at Hardt Field on Sunday afternoon, in a game that will decide the season series. Adrian Santa Cruz will get the start for Bakersfield, while Jauron Watts-Brown, the reigning Big West Pitcher of the Week will throw for the Dirtbags. Watts-Brown threw a no-hitter last Sunday in a win over UC Riverside.
