Miller Homers for Third-Straight Day, 'Runners Lose in the 9th

Northridge, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield outfielder AJ Miller belted his third home run of the weekend to tie the game in the top of the ninth, but CSUN's Mason Le homered in the bottom of the frame to walk off the runners and win the game and the series for the hosts, Sunday afternoon at Matador Field. All three games in the series were decided by one run, with the Roadrunners falling to 16-24 and 9-9 in Big West play this season.

"This was a hard-fought series by both teams with three competitive games that could have gone either way," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "We came up a bit short, but I'm proud of the effort of our guys. We should take confidence from how we played this weekend and if we continue to play this way moving forward than our best baseball is ahead of us."

Bakersfield finished the day with just four hits, though three went for extra-bases, with doubles from Cody Hendriks and Aaron Casillas along with Miller's home run. The Roadrunners flew out to the warning track on five occasions, on a day that featured 12 mph winds blowing straight in from right-center field.

Sophomore right hander Jaykob Acosta worked seven strong innings, allowing just five hits and a pair of runs while striking out two. Acosta gave the 'Runners more than a chance, despite having exited his last start due to arm soreness and seeing his start this weekend pushed back to Sunday as a result.

"Jaykob gave us a gutsy performance today, he battled and gave us a chance to win the game," Beard added.

Kenny Johnson worked a scoreless eighth, before suffering a hard-luck loss in the ninth to fall to 0-2 on the year.

CSUN Blake Schriever earned the win in relief. Matador starter Logan Braun was excellent over seven innings of his own, allowing just two hits and an earned run.

How It Happened...
B2 | CSUN opened their half of the second with a single from Bart West and a double from Joey Kramer. Mason Le followed with a sacrifice fly to right to open the scoring. Brandon Bohning followed with what appeared to be another sacrifice fly, but CSUB leftfielder James Bell made the catch in foul territory before firing home on one hop for an inning-ending double play.

B3 | A line drive double play delivered two quick outs in the CSUN third, but the next three hitters reached, culminating in a Bart West RBI single through the left-side to make it 2-0 Matadors.

T6 | Cody Hendriks doubled off the top of the leftfield wall to lead off the sixth and advanced to third on a Nicholas Anderson-Vine ground ball, before scoring on a wild pitch.

T9 | AJ Miller hit the first pitch of the ninth inning off the foul pole in left field, tying the game with his third opposite field home run of the weekend.

B9 | Le walked off the Roadrunners with a line drive home run over the fence in straightaway left to end the game in a 3-2 CSUN victory.

Notable...
AJ Miller's ninth-inning home run was his ninth of the season and third of the weekend. Only one player in CSUB history has hit as many home runs in a single season as has Miller. Martin Medina matched Miller's nine long balls in 2011, after setting the school single season record of 12 during the 2010 campaign.

• Despite battling arm soreness, Jaykob Acosta delivered the longest outing of his Roadrunner career, working into and through the seventh for the first time.

• Bakersfield finished the three-game series in Northridge with 11 extra-base hits and five home runs.

On Deck...
The Roadrunners will wrap up a six-game road swing with a trip to San Luis Obispo and a three-game series with Central California rival Cal Poly. The two teams met a year ago in Bakersfield with CSUB sweeping a four-game series.
