Mustangs Roll Past 'Runners in Series Opener

San Luis Obispo – Cal Poly scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back, rolling to an 14-1 series opening win over CSU Bakersfield in front of an announced crowd of 1,636, Friday evening at Baggett Stadium. The Mustangs improved to 11-8 in Big West Conference play, while the Roadrunners fell under .500 in conference play for the first time this season at 9-10.

Cal Poly scored single runs in the fourth and fifth, before plating another four-spot in the sixth to break the game wide open. They'd add three more in the seventh and one run in the eighth, finishing with 21 hits, five doubles and a home run.

Bakersfield shortstop Aaron Casillas finished 3-for-4 with a double and the team's lone run. He doubled to lead off the third inning and scored three batters later, when Cody Hendriks roped the first of his two singles into left field.

First baseman Joe York had five hits to lead the Mustangs, who had seven hitters record multiple hits in the game.

Cal Poly starter Drew Thorpe improved to 7-1 on the season, working six innings and allowing just four hits, while striking out nine.

Adrian Santa Cruz took the loss for CSUB surrendering 10 hits and five runs over four innings. He fell to 1-1 on the season.

The same two teams will meet again Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., in the second game of their three-game weekend series in San Luis Obispo. Sophomore right hander Jaykob Acosta will make his fourth straight start for CSUB, opposed by Mustang lefty Travis Weston.
