Roadrunners Drop High Scoring Sunday Affair

Bakersfield, Calif. - UC San Diego used a late rally to sneak past CSU Bakersfield 9-5, Sunday afternoon at Hardt Field, winning both the game and the series. The Tritons scored the games final five runs and came from behind to beat the Roadrunners for the second straight day. Bakersfield falls to 15-22 overall and 8-7 in Big West Conference play.

UCSD also scored the games first three runs in the top of the first inning against Bakersfield starter Kenny Johnson. The Tritons loaded the bases with one out, before scoring one run on a balk and two-more on a run-scoring single from first-baseman Blake Fitzgerald.

CSUB responded immediately against Triton starter Sam Hasegawa, sending all nine men to the plate despite recording just one base hit in the inning. The `Runners used four walks, a hit batter and one UCSD error to retake the lead in the bottom of the frame. Jashia Morrissey singled in a run and Angel Saldivar drove in another with an RBI ground out.

Johnson settled down after the first inning, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing just four runs. He exited in the sixth with a one run lead.

The Tritons would notch single runs in the sixth and seventh, before blowing the game open with three runs in the ninth inning.

Bakersfield lost a Big West series for just the second time this season, losing on Saturday and Sunday after winning the opener on Friday, 4-3.

James Bell was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Morrissey finished 2-for-5. Bailey Seeger reached three times with two walks and a double.

The Roadrunners will play their next six games on the road, beginning in CSUN next weekend before a three-game trip to Cal Poly the following weekend. CSUB returns to Hardt Field on May 13-15, when they host Long Beach State.
