Bakersfield Homers Three Times; Loses Late Lead at CSUN

Northridge, Calif. – CSUN scored once in the eighth and twice in the ninth, coming from behind to walk off CSU Bakersfield 5-4, Friday afternoon at Matador Field in Northridge, Calif. The Roadrunners belted three home runs in their losing effort, and fell to 15-23 overall and 8-8 in Big West play wasting a strong start from right-hander Adrian Santa Cruz.

Forced into a Friday afternoon start due to injury, Santa Cruz made perhaps his best start of the season, tossing seven complete and allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out three.

James Bell, AJ Miller and Bailey Seeger all homered against CSUN starter Blaine Traxel. Bell and Miller belted back-to-back solo shots in the fourth, while Seeger's sixth-inning blast plated a pair and put CSUB in front, 4-2.

Miller, Seeger and shortstop Aaron Casillas all finished 2-for-4 to lead the Roadrunners.

CSUN's Joey Kramer was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI, while third baseman CJ Yogi had a pair of hits including a home run.

Cody Tucker suffered the loss for Bakersfield, falling to 1-5. Matador reliever Chad Wilson allowed just one hit over the final 2.1 innings to earn his second win of the season.

How It Happened...
B2 | The Matadors got on the board first when Joey Kramer lined a two-strike double into right-center field. Gabe Gonzalez, who had been hit by a pitch, scored all the way from first to make it 1-0 CSUN.

T4 | The Roadrunners answered with back-to-back solo home runs from outfielder's James Bell and AJ Miller. Bell turned on a soft slider and homered high of a tree in left, before Miller dropped an opposite field home run over the fence in right-center field.

B5 | CSUN third baseman CJ Yogi belted a solo home run in the fifth to draw the Matadors even at two.

T6 | Bakersfield designated hitter Bailey Seeger hit his first career home run with two gone in the sixth. Daniel Carrizosa scored on the play after leading off the inning with a single.

B8 | Kai Moody singled to lead off the inning and crossed the plate on an RBI base hit off the bat of Joey Kramer to pull CSUN within a run.

B9 | The Matadors loaded the bases with just one out in their last at bat, before left-fielder Bart West chopped a ground ball over the bag at second base. Aaron Casillas made a diving stop but two runs would score before he could get back to his feet, ending the game.

Notable...
• Bell and Miller's home runs gave CSUB its first pair of back-to-back home runs since the team's inaugural season of 2009. Stuart Smith and career home run leader Martin Medina posted back-to-back home runs in a loss to Buffalo on March 12, 2009.

• Miller's homer was his seventh of the season, tying him with Andrew Allanson for the most on the team this season. It was CSUB's 24th long ball of the year, moving the 2022 Roadrunners into third on the team's single-season home run list.

• Seeger's home run was the first of his CSUB career and the Roadrunner's third of the game, marking the first time the club has hit three round trippers in a single game since a win over Northern Colorado on May 3, 2014.

• Santa Cruz' seven-inning effort was the longest of his Bakersfield career. He collected his third quality start of the year, tied for tops on the team with tomorrow's starter Kellen O'Connor

On Deck...
Bakersfield and Northridge will meet again in less than 24 hours, playing game two of their three-game Big West Conference series Saturday afternoon at Matador Field with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. Southpaw Kellen O'Connor takes the ball for CSUB, opposed by CSUN right hander Diego Gutierrez. All three games this weekend will be streamed live on ESPN+.
