UCSD Doubles Up Roadrunners, Evens Series

Bakersfield, Calif. - UC San Diego reliever Zack Ernisse tossed seven innings and allowed just one baserunner to lead the Tritons past host CSU Bakersfield 6-3, Saturday night at Hardt Field in front of an announced crowd of 818. UCSD scored the final four runs of the game to double up the Roadrunners and force a Sunday afternoon rubbermatch. Bakersfield falls to 15-21 overall and 8-6 in conference play.

"We had a chance to open the game up early and weren't able to do so," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "The two guys they brought out of the bullpen came in and competed very well and we weren't able to adjust at the plate. A couple of mistakes defensively certainly cost us and they were able to take advantage and even up the series."

After UCSD took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, Bakersfield put the first six hitters on base in the bottom of the frame en route to a 3-2 lead. With the bases still loaded and no outs, the Roadrunners two, three and four hitters were retired in order, including a pair of strikeouts. San Diego starter Noah Conlon struck out Jashia Morrissey with four-consecutive sliders. Reliever Ryan Rissas then entered, striking out AJ Miller and getting Andrew Allanson to ground out to first base and end the inning.

Ernisse took over to start the fourth inning and went the distance striking out nine 'Runners and allowing only a James Bell single in his seven inning appearance. Ernisse retired the final 21 batters he faced in picking up his first win of the season.

The Tritons scored three runs in the sixth to grab a 5-3 lead, before tacking on an insurance run in the seventh to provide the final margin of victory.

How It Happened...
T2 | UC San Diego grabbed an early lead for the second night in a row when Matt Halbach and Noah Sudyka drove in two-out runs in the second inning. Halbach singled sharply through the right side and scored when Sudyka drove a two-bagger into the left-center field gap.

B2 | The Roadrunners answered with three in the bottom of the second. Aaron Casillas singled over shortstop with the bases loaded to put CSUB on the board before Nick Salas singled through the left side to score two more. Evan Rice walked to reload the bases with no outs, but CSUB could not score any more runs in the inning.

T6 | UCSD pulled even in the sixth on a Crew Robinson RBI single, that scored Ryan McNally all the way from first and made the score 3-3. The Tritons added a pair of unearned runs when Matt Halbach scored on a dropped pop up by first-baseman Aaron Perez and scored on a Luke Saunders base hit.

T7 | With two outs McNally doubled and catcher Emiliano Gonzalez drove him in with an RBI single to plate an insurance run and give UCSD a 6-3 lead.

Notable...
• CSUB starter Kellen O'Connor walked two in 5.2 innings pitched, just his ninth and tenth bases on balls in 50.1 innings of work. O'Connor walked two hitters in a single outing for the first time in five starts, dating back to a Mar. 19 outing at UC Riverside.

• A win tomorrow would give the Roadrunners four Big West series wins in five attempts this season.

On Deck...
Bakersfield and UC San Diego will wrap up their three-game conference series with a Sunday afternoon rubbermatch at Hardt Field, beginning at 1:05 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Zach Tonarre gets the ball for the visiting Tritons, while CSUB's starter has yet to be announced.
