Nigito Gets Called Up to Play for Argentina's U-20 Team

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield incoming freshman defender Anela Nigito will be competing for Argentina's national women's soccer team at the South American Under-20 Championship that begins Wednesday, April 6.

The South American U-20 Championship is a 10-team tournament hosted by Chile from April 6 – April 24 where the top pair in the tournament will qualify for the U20 World Cup.

Group A: Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, and Peru
Group B: Brasil, Paraguay, Ecuador, Uruguay, and Bolivia

"It is a tremendous honor to represent your national team in an official tournament," said CSUB head coach Sebastian Vecchio. "Anela has worked extremely hard to get this call and she will do fantastic for Argentina in whatever roll or capacity they need her. Anela is the ultimate team player."

This is Nigito's second call-up in her career and third camp this year.

The 5-foot-8 center back first qualified in 2019, when she played on Argentina's U17 National Team in the finals win against Chile at the Cuadrangular tournament. Last year, Nigito trained with the National Team and played with her club soccer team making a run to the semifinals in the Liga Mendocina tournament.

"It is always a great pride to be called to wear the colors of my country," explained Nigito. "It is the dream of every athlete, and to be able to live it is a beautiful experience. The National Team brings out the best version of oneself."

Nigito and Argentina will open tournament play against Colombia next Friday, followed by a showdown with Peru on Sunday, April 10, and ending with its closer against Venezuela on Thursday, April 14.
