`Runners Rally for First Big West Win, Split DH in La Jolla

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Rebounding from a 7-3 loss in Game 1 of its doubleheader and a 2-0 deficit in Game 2, the CSU Bakersfield softball team rallied to take a 4-3 victory against UC San Diego on Saturday. The win was the first as members of the Big West Conference for the Roadrunners, who are playing their first series in the league this weekend.

"We had so much grit today," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Bakersfield's 11th-year Head Coach. "The team came together and are really gelling together. Kaycie Kennedy threw really well and we are starting to hit the ball like we can. It was a great team win for our first Big West W!"

CSUB 3, UCSD 7

UCSD put a couple runners on base before Isabel Lavrov's three-run homer gave the Tritons the lead in the bottom of the first inning. The home team did not stop there as a two-run shot from Clarissa Reynoso powered UCSD to an early, 5-0 lead.

The Tritons loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second inning. A hit batter scored a sixth run for UCSD, but CSUB got out of the jam without any other damage done. With bases loaded in the bottom of the third, UCSD plated a run on a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-0.

CSUB first baseman Shaylene Fuimaono broke up Jada Cecil's perfect game with a walk in the top of the fifth. Fuimaono promptly stole second base, then scored on Samantha Martinez's RBI double. Laela Minnich then delivered a pinch-hit single, driving in pinch runner Jordan Head on Minnich's first hit and RBI as a `Runner.

Down to their final three outs, Martinez delivered once again for Bakersfield, driving in Fuimaono with an RBI single to make the score 7-3. Bakersfield's rally would end there as the host Tritons sealed the victory in the Big West opener.

Samantha Martinez went 2-for-3 in the game with the pair of RBI as Bakersfield's offensive spark. In the circle, Kirsten Martinez pitched five innings in relief while allowing just two runs to the Tritons.

CSUB 4, UCSD 2

UC San Diego struck early again, plating a pair of runs on an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman pitcher Kaycie Kennedy shook off the tough start and kept the Tritons quiet until Bakersfield's offense finally broke through in the fifth inning.

Pinch runner Maya Molina-Villareal got the `Runner rally going when she went from first to third on a sacrifice bunt. Later in the fifth with two outs, Cieana Curran legged out an infield single that scored Molina-Villareal. Cydney Curran came up next and made the Tritons feel deja vu with her own infield single. Minnich delivered her second RBI of the day when she worked a full count and drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Savanna Montoya and tying the score at 2-2.

The Tritons looked primed to regain the lead in the bottom half of the fifth thanks to a one-out triple from Keila Bosinger, but Fuimaono had different plans. Playing at third base defensively, Fuimaono recorded back-to-back web gems to get the `Runners out of trouble and keep the game tied.

With catcher Natalya Rodriguez standing on second base in the top of the sixth, outfielder Kaia Johnson gave the `Runners the go-ahead run with an RBI single that Rodriguez wheeled around third to score on. Minnich tallied her first home run as a `Runner for an insurance run in top of the seventh to make the score 4-2.

Kennedy struck out two of the last three batters she faced while closing out the complete-game victory with a career-high five strikeouts. Rodriguez threw out three would-be base stealers on the day in an outstanding performance behind the plate.
