CSUB Drops Rubber Match, Series at UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Playing in a rubber match with its first chance at a Big West Conference series victory, the CSU Bakersfield softball team came out flat against UC San Diego on Monday. The visiting Roadrunners were unable to get their offense rolling and the bats of the Tritons got hot as UCSD won the series, 2-1, with a 10-0, six-inning victory at the Triton Softball Field.

"Our immaturity came out today," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Bakersfield's Head Coach. "We needed to make adjustments and we didn't."

UCSD used a leadoff triple to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but CSUB limited the damage to just the one run. Two innings later, the Triton hitting became contagious as five hits led to five runs and a 6-0 UCSD lead.

CSUB pitcher Reina Castillo came on in relief in the third and helped the `Runners get out of trouble. Castillo, a freshman from Rialto, Calif., kept UCSD quiet until the bottom of the sixth. The Tritons loaded the base and UCSD first baseman Bobby Aguirre ended the game with a single swing of the bat. Aguirre's grand slam put the Tritons ahead 10-0, triggering the run rule victory.

Bakersfield tallied just a pair of hits against UCSD on Monday. CSUB shortstop Cydney Curran and first baseman Lauren Randle each recorded singles as Jada Cecil, who leads the Big West in strikeouts this season, earned her second victory of the weekend against the `Runners. Cecil threw a complete-game shutout while fanning 11 `Runners on Monday.

CSUB (4-15, 1-2 Big West) will return to Bakersfield with a few days to regroup and prepare for a tough challenge this weekend. The `Runners will welcome preseason league favorite Cal State Fullerton (17-12, 2-1 Big West) for CSUB's first-ever Big West home series, Mar. 26-27.
