Bakersfield Begins Busy Week at Stanford, Thursday

Bakersfield, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield kicks off a busy week on Thursday, Feb. 10 with a road matchup at Pac-12 rival Stanford at 5 p.m., before wrapping up a four-dual road swing with a tri-meet at Cal Poly, along with non-conference foe Air Force on Sunday, Feb. 13. The Roadrunners have won two of their last three outings and enter the stretch run with momentum, winning at least four bouts in each of their last three contests after winning just seven total in their first four competitions.

The return of Chance Rich (133), Josh Loomer (197) and Jacob Sieder (285) in the second half of the season continues to buoy CSUB, as the trio has combined for seven victories over the past three contests. Loomer and Sieder returned at the semester break, while Rich made his first appearance since Dec. 19 splitting a pair of bouts at California Baptist.

CSUB improved to 2-6 on the season with the win in Riverside, and has four matchups remaining in the regular season, including three against conference opponents.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION...
Stanford enters the week with a 3-3 overall record and a 1-1 mark in conference play. The Cardinal saw a two-match winning streak snapped with a 25-15 defeat at the hands of #4 Arizona State. Top-ranked wrestlers Real Woods (9-0) and Shane Griffith (11-2) lead Stanford at 141 and 165 pounds, respectively.

Cal Poly is 2-2 this season, with an 1-2 record against Pac-12 opponents. The Mustangs lost to both Arizona State and Oregon State, while winning non-conference duals against Northern Illinois and Little Rock. Bernie Truax (174), Evan Wick (165) and Legend Lamar (149) lead the club with four dual victories each.

Air Force will join Cal Poly and CSUB in San Luis Obispo, bringing with them a 3-6 record, including a win over California Baptist. The Falcons have lost three straight, with the last two coming against ranked opponents Northern Iowa and Iowa State. Cody Phippen leads Air Force with 12 wins on the year.

ROADRUNNER NOTES...

*  Bakersfield grabbed its second victory of the season with a 20-19 win over California Baptist. Josh Loomer (197), Jacob Sieder (285), Eddie Flores (125), Albert Urias (174) and Jacob Hansen (184) posted victories as the Roadrunners came from behind to best the Lancers.

* Albert Urias (174), Jacob Hansen (184) and Jacob Sieder (285) have each won three dual meet bouts in a row, dating back to a Jan. 16 matchup with American. Angelo Martinoni (141) also boasts a three-bout winning streak, but missed the dual with CBU and remains 18-9 overall. Josh Loomer (197) has won three of four, while Eddie Flores (125) has been victorious in two of his last three outings.

* Three of CSUB's final four duals of the season will involve Pac-12 Opponents, leading up to the 2022 Pac-12 Championships on March. 5, at Arizona State. The `Runners are 0-1 in league action to date, with a cancelation of December's contest scheduled at Little Rock. CSUB enters the week 5th in the Pac-12 Standings.

* Bakersfield has averaged 23.0 points per dual in its last three outings, after managing just 4.5 PPD in its first four.

* #14 Chance Rich (133) and #27 Angelo Martinoni (141) remain ranked in the Intermat weight-class polls. Both wrestlers are also recognized in the NCAA Coaches' Rankings at #14 & #23, respectively.

* Head Coach Luke Smith picked up the first dual meet victory of his CSUB career against American at the Chippewa Challenge, on the very same mats he dominated as four-time All-American at Central Michigan. The Roadrunners dominated the Eagles, winning all nine contested bouts, dropping only a forfeit at 133 pounds.

* CSUB alumni Jon AzevedoJoe GonzalesAdam Cuestas and Dan Cuestas were all inducted into the Jim Koch Division II Hall of Fame on Feb. 1, 2022. The quartet combined for four Division II National Titles with the `Runners.

* Bakersfield has wrestled hard against a difficult schedule all season long. Most recently, CSUB fell late to #8 Arizona State, 26-15, including a forfeit at 133 pounds. The `Runners have faced four ranked opponents so far this season.

* Bakersfield sent three wrestlers to the 2021 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo., including returnees Chance Rich (133) and Angelo Martinoni (141), to extend its streak of sending at least one competitor to nationals to 47-consecutive seasons. Then senior Dominic Ducharme also participated in the event.

Chance Rich (133), Angelo Martinoni (141) and Josh Loomer (184, 2020) give CSUB three NCAA Qualifiers on its 29-man roster. Rich advanced to the round of 16 in 2021, while Martinoni finished with a record of 1-2 in his weight class. Loomer won the 184-pound, Pac-12 Championship in 2020, but did not compete at nationals due to the COVID-19 cancellation.

* Eight of Bakersfield's 14 dual opponents are ranked in the top-25, or receiving votes, in the latest NWCA Coaches' Poll. Those eight programs include four Pac-12 rivals, with Arizona State (#6) and Cal Poly (#25), while and Oregon State sit just outside the poll. The Roadrunners dropped their season opener at #4 Michigan and will also face #13 Iowa State this Wednesday, before visiting foes Central Michigan (RV) and Campbell (RV) on Sunday, Jan. 16.

* Seven `Runners hail from Bakersfield, Calif., representing four different high schools in one of the top wrestling communities in the state of California and the Western United States. The city boasts a USA Wrestling Regional Training Center and hosts the CIF Championships each year at Mechanic's Bank Arena. Seven more CSUB scholar-athletes hail from seven different high schools in California's Central Valley. Fresno State's decision to discontinue wrestling leaves CSUB as the lone DI program in the Central Valley.

* Roadrunner wrestlers have won nine NCAA Division I National Championships, including a pair of national titles from Dan Cuestas and Stephen Neal. CSUB also boasts 30 Division II National Champions in its program history.

* Four-time All-American selection Stephen Neal highlights the list of 45 NCAA Division I All-Americans at CSUB. Roadrunner grapplers have also captured 87 Division II All-American honors.

* CSU Bakersfield has sent 17 wrestling alumni to either the Olympic Games or the World Championship freestyle competition. Only eight schools nationally have sent more athletes. That number does not include the `Runners 10 alternate selections and three coaching nods. John Azevedo and Joe Gonzalez were also chosen for the 1980 Olympic Team, but did not compete due to the US boycott of the Soviet games.
