`Runner Relays Highlight Day One at MPSF Championships

Women's 800 Freestyle Relay Posts 5th Fastest Time in School History

SAN GABRIEL, CA – The Roadrunners opened the 2022 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Swimming & Diving Championships with four relay swims, Wednesday evening at the East Los Angeles College Swim Stadium in San Gabriel, Calif. CSU Bakersfield sent men's and women's teams to the blocks in both the 200 Medley Relays and the 800 Freestyle Relays.

Mikayla Popham, Autumn D'Arcy, Lorena Jerebic and Ariane Skeggs combined for fifth-fastest time in school history (7:24.49) in the freestyle relay, setting the tone for the evening and the upcoming championships.

"The women's freestyle relay was the highlight of our first day and a sign of great things to come this weekend," said CSUB Director of Swimming Chris Hansen. "We'll have to be faster as a group tomorrow, but we made some adjustments today, knocked off some rest, and we're looking forward to a great meet."

The Bakersfield women were fifth in the freestyle relay and ninth in the 200 medley (1:46.60), while the CSUB men posted a pair of seventh-place finishes in the freestyle (1:32.00) and the medley (6:39.69).

The MPSF Championships continue Thursday morning with the 50 Freestyle, the 500 Freestyle, the 200 Individual Medley and the 200 Freestyle Relay.

D'Arcy is the number one seed in the 200 IM and will swim for her eighth conference championship in three seasons at CSUB. Popham is the second seed in the 50 Freestyle, while Skeegs is the tenth seed in the 500 Freestyle.

Lars Hanna (200 IM) and Kadin Denner (500 Free) are the highest seeded men in tomorrow's events.

Bakersfield's Diving teams will also begin competition tomorrow from Mission Viejo, Calif., with the women's competing on the 3-Meter board and the men on the 1-meter board.
