Men's Track & Field Join Women for Outdoor Season

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield men's track and field program will join the women in competition this week starting off the 2022 outdoor season at Fresno Pacific University. A balanced and eager group with championship leadership make for an exciting year for the Roadrunners.

Mid-Distance

Curtis Threlkeld will make his return this spring for his final season.  In his last year of competition, Threlkeld qualified for the 2019 NCAA Regionals in the 800-meter advancing to the second round and earning the highest NCAA Division I program finish.  He ranks second all-time at CSUB in the 800m, sitting less than 0.34 seconds from the record, and is also on program depth charts in the 400m and 1500m distances. Threlkeld is looking to make history with his first Big West title, third career conference title, and a return to the NCAA finals.  

Sebastian Flores will also represent CSUB in mid-distance focusing on the 800m race in his first official season with the `Runners.

Throws

A strong group of throwers also highlight the men's team in 2022.  Redshirt sophomore Tom Richardson will throw hammer, shot put and discus. Hugo Santana, who finished sixth in hammer throw last year at the Big West Championships and ranks 20th all-time at CSUB, returns for his final campaign with the Roadrunners.
Jacob Whitby, Axel Salazar, and Matthew Garrett prepare for their first full season with CSUB track & field joining Richardson and Santana in hammer throw. Whitby is back this season after a serious back injury took him out of competition in 2021.  Salazar, a junior college transfer, and freshman Garrett round out group in hammer throw. 

Director of Track & Field, Cross Country mentioned, "CSUB has a rich history of highly competitive throwers, and this group will carry on that tradition." 

Jumps

Bakersfield returns a small group of jumpers in Jesus Alverez, Ryan Bentley, and Bradly Bryant. Alverez and Bentley prepare for year two in high jump looking to improve on their freshmen seasons. Bryant will jump alone in his specialty event, triple jump, which he ranks 20th all-time at CSUB.

Hurdles/Sprints

The sprint group is led by redshirt senior Derek Crawford who had a breakthrough season last spring in the 200m and 400m dashes. Crawford will be joined in both events by redshirt sophomore JJ Flores and newcomer Koby Custodio.  Gavyn Dingle and Kenny Rugnau will race in the 100m and 200m events while SkyBlue Gonzales joins Crawford, Flores, and Custodio in the 400m.

The Roadrunners return a pair of student athletes to the hurdles group. Redshirt junior Evan Vigrass and sophomore Brandon Andrade return for their second seasons with the `Runners racing in the 110H and 400H again.
