`Runners Battle UCSB But Come Up Short

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Returning to dual season with a tough task against a formidable conference foe, the Cal State Bakersfield swimming and diving teams went toe to toe with fellow MPSF member UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners and Gauchos fought through cold temperatures and foggy, wet air as visiting UCSB earned wins on both sides. The `Runner women fell to the Gauchos 175-101 while Bakersfield's men dropped a slightly closer decision, 169-116.

Women
  • Mikayla Popham picked up a six-second victory in the 500 freestyle, posting a time of 5:03.44. She also finished second in the 200 IM (2:09.34) and the 200 free (1:53.07).
  • Chelaine Van der Westhuizen earned a double, claiming victories in the 100 (1:04.03) and 200 breaststroke (2:18.35).
  • Freshman Kylie Ney placed second in the 1000 free with a time of 10:36.15.
  • Lorena Jerebic placed second with a 58.48 in the 100 fly.
  • Chloe Brown posted a season-high score in the 1-meter springboard (216.55).
Men
  • The men's 400 free relay team of Antonio Milin, Yigit Saglam, Vili Sivec, and Arthur Schneider took a victory, holding off UCSB by half a second with a time of 3:03.88
  • Sivec won two races on Saturday, the 200 free (46.55) and the 100 fly (49.69).
  • Schneider placed second in the 200 free with a mark of 1:42.98. He also swam the 500 free (4:41.36) and 200 IM (1:58.71).
  • Saglam was half a second behind Sivec for a second-place finish in the 100 fly (50.16). He also kept busy, swimming both `Runner relays.
  • Anderson Laing and Robert Vlad traded wins on the diving boards. Laing won the 3-meter (213.35) while Vlad took the 1-meter (226.80).
