Van der Westhuizen, Sivec Grab Wins at Roadrunner Invitational

Bakersfield - The California State University, Bakersfield swimming and diving teams closed out the opening weekend off competition with two more wins at the Roadrunner Invitational, Saturday afternoon at the John S. Hillman Aquatic Center. Chelaine Van der Westhuizen won for the second-straight day, while freshman Villi Sivec grabbed his first-career victory to lead their respective teams to fifth and fourth-place finishes. 
"It was great to see two more wins from newcomers in Chelaine and Villi, and they led with some great relay splits also," said CSUB Director of Swimming Chris Hansen. "We had several standout efforts, including another strong day from Dyson (Modica) on the boards." 
Notable Women's Performances...
* A day after winning the 50 Breaststroke, Van der Westhuizen took top honors in the 200 Breaststroke with her time of 2:18.59. She added an opening split of 1:03.xx in the 100 Breaststroke to lead off the 400 Medley Relay. 
* Mikayla Popham added a pair of top-three finishes, placing third in the 200 Free (1:52.19), before clocking a second-place finish in the 200 Back (2:04.74). 
* Freshman Kylie Ney placed second in the 1000 Freestyle with a time of 10:29.20. 
Notable Men's Performances...
* Sivec finished first in the 200 Butterfly, posting a 1:49.26 to win his first ever collegiate race. Sivec also led the 'Runner relays with strong opening splits in the 400 Free Relay and the 400 Medley Relay. 
* Arthur Schnedier placed third in the 200 Freestyle clocking home in 1:41.04. 
* Jacob Folson capped a great first weekend at CSUB with a 9:54.48 to finish 4th in the 1000 Freestyle. 
* Dyson Modica led the 'Runner divers with a strong performance for the second straight day. 
Up Next...
The Roadrunner men and women will open dual meet competition a week from today, when they welcome Pomona-Pitzer to the John S. Hillman Aquatic Center on Oct. 22 at noon. The Bakersfield men bested the Sagehens by a 210-73 margin a season ago, while the women were also victorious, outscoring PPU 186.5-113.5. Next weekend's dual is the first of four home duals this season. Admission to all CSUB swimming & diving events is free of charge and fans can enter through the gate adjacent to the Icardo Center parking lot.
